Obituary of Alison A. Sorce
Alison A. Sorce, 87, passed away peacefully, on May 2, 2025. Born in Pennsylvania to the late John and Alison Whelan (nee Thomson), Alison was one of eight children to bless the Whelan family. Her early years in a big loving family laid the foundation for a life marked by warmth and generosity. After completing her schooling, she met the love of her life, Michael Sorce. Their connection was immediate and profound, and after just two whirlwind months, they were married.
They settled in New Jersey and eventually made their home in Lake Hiawatha, where they raised their three children. Alison was a fiercely loyal and devoted mother. The Sorce household was always a place of welcome—where the door was open, the table was set, and laughter filled the rooms. She worked tirelessly alongside her husband to build a good life for their family.
Alison dedicated many years of her life to her career, retiring from Economics Press after decades of service. However, of all the roles she held in her lifetime, her most cherished was that of “Nana.” Becoming a grandmother brought her immense joy, and she was the proud and loving Nana to eight grandchildren, each of whom brought her such pride and happiness. She was crowned great Nana just three years ago.
Although we are saddened by her passing, we take comfort in knowing she is back in the arms of her devoted husband once again.
She leaves her children Alison Herbst (Richard), John Sorce (Anne Marie) and Michelle Herbst (Darren); her eight adored grandchildren Richard Herbst (Mary), Vanessa Herbst (Ed), Ashley Cifuentes, Travis Herbst (Kayla), Michael Sorce, Joseph Sorce, Nicole Magana (Omar) and Donna Herbst (David); her great granddaughters Cecelia and Evelyn; her sister Aurelia Flickinger; sister in law Alice Headrick (Bob); brother in law Albert “Buddy” La Vacca; and many dear nieces, nephews and friends. She was predeceased by her dear husband Michael of 49 years; and her siblings Michael Whelan, Joyce Rogers, John Whelan Jr., Patsy Conlon, Betty Woods and Robert Whelan.
Visiting hours will be held on Tuesday, May 6th from 4-8 pm at the funeral home. Private cremation to follow. On Saturday, May 31st, Alison and Michael will be laid to rest in a companion urn at Gate of Heaven Mausoleum, East Hanover. Donations in her name may be made to the good work of St. Jude Children's Research Hospital.
