Obituary of John Richard Veleber
John Richard Veleber, 87, passed away peacefully, June 22nd surrounded by love, on the day he and his wife Gloria marked their 62nd wedding anniversary.
Born in 1937 to the late John and Elizabeth, John was raised in Garfield, NJ. After his schooling, he met Gloria at a church function, and the rest, as they say, was history. He went on to earn his BS in Electrical Engineering from the Newark College of Engineering and later earned his master’s degree.
He dedicated his professional life to the field of electrical engineering, spending many years with RFL, Boonton Electronics, Bendix, Allied Signal, and L3. His work contributed to landmark projects such as the Delta Rocket, the Apollo Missions and the Hubble Space Telescope, and he never lost his enthusiasm for meeting astronauts and talking shop even in retirement.
His successes in work included a design and the patent for the Crystal Impedance Meter, which was an improved meter for measuring the impedance and power dissipation of a crystal. In addition, he went to Japan to instruct people regarding electronic devices.
Outside of work, John had a deep love of history - especially World War II. He spent many summers carefully tending to his garden, enjoying the sunny days. A lover of good food and good company, John treasured time spent with his family.
He and Gloria shared a passion for antiquing, often spending weekends at the old Boonton auction or exploring antique shops across New Jersey and Pennsylvania in search of their next great find.
He was a faithful attender of the Evangelical Lutheran Church in Garfield, NJ, and later on, Jacksonville Chapel in Lincoln Park, NJ. He regularly read his Bible together with his wife. He prayed for his family often.
John was a devoted husband, father, grandfather, dear neighbor and friend. He will be missed beyond measure. He leaves his wife Gloria of 62 years; his children John Veleber (Christine) and Allison Alexander (Iain); his grandchildren Michael, Nadia and Katya Alexander and Amelia and Vanessa Veleber.
Following a private family farewell, John will be laid to rest at Lodi Cemetery in their family plot.
