Sister Mary Canavan, SC, (formerly Sister Assumpta Mary) 96, a committed member of the Sisters of Charity of Saint Elizabeth for 78 years, peacefully entered into eternal life on Monday, September 1, 2025, at Saint Catherine of Siena Health Care Center, Caldwell, New Jersey.

Born in Ridgefield Park, New Jersey, to Frederick and Esther (Buckley) Canavan, Sister Mary was the youngest of seven children. Sister Mary dedicated her life to service, education, and leadership.

She received her B.A. in French from the College of Saint Elizabeth and her M.A. in Education from Villanova University.

Sister Mary began her ministry in 1947 as an elementary school teacher, serving at Our Lady Help of Christians, East Orange; Sacred Heart, Vailsburg; and Our Lady of All Souls, East Orange. She continued her service to young people as a high school French teacher and later as a guidance counselor at Bayley-Ellard High School, Madison and Immaculate Conception High School, Montclair, roles in which she offered both academic and personal guidance with care and compassion.

Sister Mary was appointed Dean of Students at the College of Saint Elizabeth. She went on to serve in elected leadership in the Northern Province of the Sisters of Charity for six years, followed by eight years as Assistant General Superior, and then eight years as General Superior of the Sisters of Charity of Saint Elizabeth. Her leadership was marked by vision, foresight, and a steadfast dedication to mission.

After completing her years in congregational leadership, Sister Mary served as Vice President for Mission Services at the Hospital of Saint Raphael, New Haven, Connecticut. She also held many Trustee positions at Institutions sponsored by the Sisters of Charity of Saint Elizabeth.

Upon retirement, Sister Mary spent a decade in Hamilton, New York, where she volunteered at a residential school for developmentally disabled adults, a local nursing home, and a New York State correctional facility. Her generosity of spirit and compassion for the vulnerable continued to touch many lives.

Returning to New Jersey, Sister Mary embraced the role of Vice-Postulator of the Cause of Sister Miriam Teresa Demjanovich, a ministry that culminated in the Beatification of Blessed Miriam Teresa in October 2014.

Sister Mary loved and remained deeply devoted to the Sisters of Charity, her family, and friends, cherishing them always and holding them close in prayer. Sister Mary deeply valued the friendships she formed with the staff at Saint Catherine of Siena. She will be remembered for her compassion, generosity, love, and strength. She carried a wonderful sense of humor and a rare gift for seeing the good in everyone and everything. Gentle yet strong, intelligent, and insightful, she 2 inspired others through her kindness and wisdom.

An avid reader and lifelong learner, her foresight and thoughtful guidance enriched the lives of all who had the blessing of knowing her. She leaves behind a legacy of faith, leadership, and love that will continue to inspire for generations to come.

Sister Mary was predeceased by her parents Frederick and Esther Canavan, her brothers Frederick, John, Peter, David, and Robert Canavan, and her sister Esther Canavan Shields.
