Obituary of Joseph Keegan

Please share a memory of Joseph to include in a keepsake book for family and friends.

“And until we meet again, may God hold you in the psalm of His hand.”

Joseph “Joe” Keegan, 61, of Parsippany, passed away tragically and unexpectedly on September 17, 2025.

Born on February 29, 1964, Joe was a proud leap year baby. His family always found joy in celebrating his unique birthday, and just last year surprised him with a memorable “quinceañera.” Like Joe himself, the Keegan family knew how to laugh, celebrate, and make the most out of every moment together.

The son of the late Joseph and Catherine, Joe was raised in Livingston and went on to pursue a career in law enforcement. He joined the Fairfield Police Department on January 9, 1989, as a probationary officer, graduating from the Essex County Police Academy. Over nearly three decades of service, Joe distinguished himself as a dedicated and respected “cop’s cop.” He was promoted to corporal on September 22, 1997, and to Sergeant on June 23, 2003.

Throughout his career, Joe took on many roles, including serving as an emergency medical technician, a member of the department’s Emergency Services Unit, and officer in charge of the Technology Unit. In 2015, he also served as a task force officer on the Essex County Major Crimes Task Force.  Joe retired from the Fairfield Police Department on June 30, 2018, after nearly 30 years of dedicated service.

Joe was devoted above all else to his family. He married the love of his life, Suzy (née Steglitz), on November 25, 1992, and together they built a beautiful life in Parsippany. He was the rock of his family and the “go-to guy” for everything and everyone. Tireless, resourceful, and deeply caring, Joe was happiest when surrounded by those he loved.

A lifelong New York Mets fan, Joe attended dozens of games. He enjoyed days at the beach, saltwater fishing, and working on cars—always ready to fix any problem that came his way. His zest for life, quick humor, and carefree spirit will be remembered forever.

Joe leaves behind his beloved wife of 32 years, Suzy; his cherished children, Cydney and Joseph “Jake”; sisters, Debbie Page and Mary Beth Harring; many nieces and nephews He is also remembered with love by many nieces, neighbors, dear friends and colleagues who will carry his memory forward.

His parents; his sister Christine DiBlasio and his loyal pups Shadow, Nico and Sushi passed before him.

The loss of Joe Keegan is one that will be felt for decades to come.

Friends and relatives may visit on Friday, September 26 th from 2-6 pm. A prayer service will be held at 4:30 pm. The Keegan family will also recieve guests at a recepetion following Joe's services at the Fairfield Fire Department.
