My name is Chun. Steve was a good friend of mine. I met Steve in 1971 when I participated in a Summer Program at Manhattan College for talented high school students in math and science. On the first day of classes, I was running late. After I got off the subway, I saw another Chinese guy walking swiftly on the subway platform. We greeted each other, and I learned that his name was Steve and that he was attending the same Summer Program. He was attending Stuyvesant High School. Since he had experience with computers, he was very helpful to me in the computer lab activities. We often hung out together, I got to know him better, and we became good friends.
During our senior year, both of us took college-level math classes at Brooklyn College on Saturdays. One time, I saw him doodling on his note pad and practicing reading upside down in class. He told me that he was practicing that in the subway, and a guy asked him whether he knew that he was reading upside down. Steve told him that he was indeed reading upside down and read aloud to show him.
For college applications during my senior year, I initially applied to only local schools in New York. It was Steve who influenced me to apply to MIT and both of us were accepted.
Steve pursued a double major in Physics and Electrical Engineering at MIT. Once again, he influenced me and I decided to major in Electrical Engineering. On campus, we frequently hung out together and went ice skating during the weekends. We were also active in the Chinese Student Club where he served as its President. After graduation, we moved to different states for work, but we kept in touch. He was even the best man at my wedding in Maryland.
Steve had a friendly personality and befriended many people. He treasured his friendship and frequently took the initiative to contact his friends. Every year, he was among the first to send out Christmas greetings that started a chain of responses and Christmas updates among friends. While we mainly communicated with each other through emails before, in the past three years we were able to hang out together again. We got together with fellow MIT classmates Thomas and Lilly. We would reminisce about our college days, and talk about our children and grandchildren, our retirement, and our health.
Recently about a month ago, Steve and I met with another fellow classmate and friend David. We met up in Flushing for dim-sum. Steve mentioned that he was really looking forward to our 50th MIT Class Reunion. He was also excited about the graduation ceremony of his son Carlin.
Steve was a great Chinese poet. Even though he only completed primary school in Hong Kong, he used many advanced literary characters in his classical Chinese poems, which evoked and revealed his deep thoughts and emotions in a subtle Chinese way.
I treasure his friendship and I will miss him dearly! The silver lining is that Steve is now with Brenda in heaven! May God bless his family!
