Obituary of Stephen Leung

Stephen Yee Yan Leung, affectionately known as Steve, passed away suddenly on November 1, 2025, at his home in Montville Township, NJ. He was 71.

Born in Hong Kong, Steve immigrated to the United States at the age of twelve, settling in New York, NY. He spent his childhood in Chinatown, Manhattan, where he attended Stuyvesant High School before moving to Boston, Massachusetts, to pursue a degree in electrical engineering at MIT. Steve spent many cherished years at MIT where he earned his Bachelor's and Master's Degrees, as well as his Ph.D., and made lifelong friends along the way. While studying, he was also a member of the Chinese Student Club and the Ballroom Dancing Club.

Steve met his love, Brenda Fong, at an MIT dance gathering in New York City where he impressed her with his dance moves. The two were married on July 5, 1986, and moved to Pine Brook, NJ, in 1987, where they raised their three children, Derek, Jessica, and Carlin. Steve and Brenda spent 37 wonderful years together before her untimely passing in May 2023.

Most recently, as an electrical engineer, Steve worked as an independent contractor with Jabil Inc, of Warren, NJ, before his retirement three years ago. He previously worked at Bell Laboratories and Alcatel-Lucent.

Steve will be remembered for his love for writing and reading Chinese poetry, creating paper origami, curling up with a good book, sharing riddles and jokes with his friends and family, and being unapologetically himself all the time.

Preceded in death by his loving wife, Brenda, Steve is survived by Derek and his wife, Danielle Thammasila, of Austin, TX; Jessica and her husband, Derek Young, of Pflugerville, TX; and Carlin, who resides in Pine Brook, NJ; a brother, Turin Leung, of Newton, MA; two sisters, Denise Leung of Katy, TX, and Anna Leung of New York, NY; and his two cherished grandchildren, Zoe Young and Oliver Leung.

Relatives and friends are invited to attend the visitation on Saturday, November 8, 2025, 9:00am to 1:00pm, at S.J. Priola Parsippany Funeral Service, 60 North Beverwyck Road, Lake Hiawatha, NJ. Private Cremation will follow on Monday at Locust Hill Crematory, in Dover, NJ.

In lieu of flowers, memorial gifts in honor of Steve can be made to the Livingston Chinese School, a place where both Steve and Brenda spent many years supporting.
