Eddie was a great, compassionate guy who had a wonderful sense of humor. He was a great husband and father to his daughter, also a great grandfather.
He was a phenomenal cook who loved inventing his own recipes.
You were a great father-in-law, Eddie, and you will be missed dearly. R.I.P.

Eddie was always the life of the party, you can tell when he arrived because that's where laughter was echoing from the most. He had a larger than life personality and was always keen to share a story or two to whoever would listen. He was a joy to be around and always left an impression, some of my earliest memories come from him smoking a cigar on the foot of the stairs where we all lived in the apartment complex, telling stories about the food he had on his travels and then ushering us away before his next story. I'll miss you Eddie, you were unparreleled force that brought laughter everywhere you went.

And now for a memory:
Eddie had planned a camping trip for his grandchildren (J.J. and Gabby) and invited Nate and Edie, as well. I agreed to go with and help chaperone. Unfortunately, J.J. and Gabby could not go at that time, but Eddie still insisted on going with Nate, Edie and myself. He was happy to do it for the children’s sake. He had a two room tent as shelter.
Already things were not right because J.J. and Gabby couldn’t come, but Eddie took it all in stride. We set up the tent together, with the kids’ help and Eddie’s guidance. The campground had a pool, and we all decided to go. I am not a water person. So, I took the nervous Edie; Eddie took the rambunctious Nate. Edie and I survived. Nate and Eddie thrived.
We both watched as Eddie taught Nathan things, threw him in the air to land in the water; flipped him in the water; taught him how to float and how to tread water. Nathan trusted him the entire time, and so did I. He was a Grandpa.
Later that evening we had hot dogs over an open fire. Everybody laughed and had a great time. When it came time for bed, we went into our separate cabins in the tent. And then, it started to rain. The tent was …leaky…for all of us. We were all miserable, cold, wet, and sleepless. By morning, nobody was happy.
We broke camp. Eddie suggested breakfast, and found a diner nearby. We went, and ordered anything and everything the kids wanted – pancakes, French toast, eggs, bacon, sausage, potatoes, all the syrups. It was the most extravagant breakfast that I had ever had. Same for Edie and Nathan – they loved it. All thanks to Eddie.
You cannot talk about Eddie without talking about family.
Eddie is our family also. And so are all of you.
We all feel his loss.

Eddie’s capacity for love was his greatest strength. He fiercely loved his Georgina. His devotion to Vannessa and John was incredible. And his grandchildren were the center of his world. Family, his family, meant everything to him.
His love extended even further, though, including those he considered close friends. He adopted them as family and included them in his circle of strength, as well. He would often talk about people that I had never met – friends – but his stories and fondness of those people reflected that profound love of family.
I met Eddie more than 20 years ago, I was a new father, just moved into an apartment across the street. I tend to be shy, but it didn’t take long for the Guzman’s, (and later the Sanchez’s), to become more than neighbors. And it was all because of Eddie. He introduced himself first. He invited me over to sit on the outside wall, share a beer, and talk. Mostly it was just random things. What’s happening in the world, food, local places, work. Sometimes it was deeper – fatherhood, relationships, family. It didn’t take long for a friendship to develop.
Shortly thereafter, Diana would do the same. While I sat, she watched the kids. While she sat, I did. Edie became a friend to both of us. Soon thereafter we met Ginny. Then Vannessa and John … J.J. … Gabby … Christopher … Zachery and Xavier.
You cannot talk about Eddie without talking about family. And, once again, it didn’t take long.
It wasn’t just “J.J. and Gabby;” it was “J.J. and Nathan and Gabbie and Edie.” It wasn’t “J.J. come here.” Instead, it was “J.J. and Nathan, come here,” or “Gabbie and Edie, come here.” Eddie had now also become my children’s Grandfather through his own force of sheer will. He was always there for all of them – ready to teach, ready to show all of them something new, ready to care for all of them and love all of them.
All of you are the best – the family I have never had – and it all started because of Eddie. He was the most fearless, honest, and kindest person I have ever met. And he was more than a friend to me – Eddie was also my family.
Love,
Doug
