Sister Jane Frances Brady, SC, 90, a member of the Sisters of Charity of Saint Elizabeth for 67 years, entered into eternal life surrounded by family on Friday, January 23, 2026, at Saint Catherine of Siena Health Care Facility, Caldwell, New Jersey.
Born in White Plains, New York, Sister Jane was the daughter of Joseph and Helen (Mooney) Brady. She spent many happy childhood summers on Cape Cod, experiences she treasured throughout her life. Before entering religious life, Sister Jane worked in the Long Lines Division of the American Telephone and Telegraph Company in White Plains, New York. She pursued higher education with distinction, earning a Bachelor of Science in Business Administration from the College of Saint Elizabeth, Convent Station, New Jersey; a Master of Business Administration in Business Management from Seton Hall University, South Orange, New Jersey; and a Master of Science in Hospital Administration from Columbia University’s School of Public Health and Administrative Medicine in New York.
Her ministry was marked by extraordinary leadership and service in healthcare. Sister Jane served as Executive Secretary for the Office of the Secretary General of the Sisters of Charity of Saint Elizabeth and devoted more than three decades to Saint Joseph’s Hospital and Medical Center in Paterson, New Jersey. Beginning as an administrative assistant, she advanced through positions of increasing responsibility, serving as Administrator and later as President and Chief Executive Officer. During her tenure she oversaw the opening of one of New Jersey’s first children’s hospitals, a cardiovascular surgery program, a neonatal intensive care unit, and trauma center. She also led the expansion outside of Paterson with the integration of the Wayne campus. She was widely respected as a role model in healthcare, known for her vision, integrity, and compassion.
She later served as Executive Director of Eva’s Village in Paterson, continuing her lifelong commitment to the poor and marginalized. Sister Jane volunteered extensively, including service as a Court Appointed Special Advocate (CASA) in Morris and Sussex Counties, with Children’s Specialized Hospital, New Jersey, and with Healing the Children Mid-Atlantic, Inc., where she traveled overseas to Africa and Latin America on healthcare missions. She also held numerous trustee positions and served on many healthcare-related boards. In recognition of her remarkable contributions, Sister Jane received many honors, including her induction into the New Jersey Hall of Fame in 2020.
Beyond her professional accomplishments, Sister Jane deeply loved her family. She cherished every opportunity to be present at family gatherings and was generous in sharing her wisdom and guidance with them. In her quieter moments she found joy in cross-stitching, sewing, and knitting. She enjoyed reading and writing, with several published papers to her credit. She found comfort and renewal at the Jersey Shore and loved to travel worldwide embracing new cultures and experiences.
A passionate advocate for the underprivileged and underserved, Sister Jane was deeply committed to equity in healthcare and was instrumental in advancing Charity Care for those without insurance. Strong-willed, intelligent, and compassionate, she lived a life rooted in faith, justice, and service. She embodied the mission of the Sisters of Charity in both word and action. Her legacy lives on in the institutions she strengthened, the lives she uplifted, and the countless individuals who continue to benefit from her leadership, compassion, and unwavering commitment to justice.
