Obituary of James S. Mercado

James Mercado, beloved husband, father, grandfather, and friend, passed away peacefully on February 1st at Overlook Hospital. He was 66 years young.

Born on January 7, 1960, in Jaro, Iloilo City, Philippines, James was the youngest of eight children of Hamplish and Florentina Mercado. He was the devoted husband of Shanel Mercado, the love of his life, and the proud father of Roxanne, Nicole, Christopher, and Dinielle. Together, James and Shanel made their home in Wharton and parishioners of St. Mary’s Church.

James dedicated 37 years to GE Metem Corp and was known by all as the life of the party—his laughter contagious, his heart selfless, and his generosity boundless. He loved bringing people together, especially during summer gatherings at his home. A passionate photographer and world traveler, James found joy in capturing life’s most meaningful moments and the beauty of the places he visited.

He was especially grateful for a recent trip to the Philippines, where he spent treasured time with loved ones.

Predeceased by his parents and siblings Hamplish Jr., Stephen, Mary Jane, and Arthur.  James leaves behind his wife of 20 years, Shanel; his children Roxanne Niel, Nicole Mercado, Christopher Mercado, and Dinielle De Veyra; his grandchildren Khayleb Cole, Emma Lolita, Soul, and Enzo Christopher; his siblings Maria Eva Patwa, Hildreth Alamo, and Julie Banzon; and many dear relatives and friends.

Visiting hours will be held Saturday, February 7th from 3–7 PM and Sunday from 10 AM–12 PM. A Mass of Catholic Burial will be celebrated Monday, February 9th at 10 AM at St. Mary’s Church, Wharton, NJ. Burial will follow at Gate of Heaven Cemetery, East Hanover, NJ.
