Obituary of Norbert C. Kalokira, Jr.

Please share a memory of Norbert to include in a keepsake book for family and friends.

Norbert Charles Kalokira Jr., 87, of Lake Parsippany, NJ, passed away on Saturday, January 31st, due to complications from a stroke.

Born in Rahway, NJ, Norbert—known to many as Norby—was the beloved son of Al and Blanche (Ongaro) Kalokira and the cherished brother of Joan Waite. He grew up in several New Jersey communities, including Newark and Parsippany.

A proud graduate of Boonton High School’s Class of 1956 (Go “Boonton Bombers”), Norbert remained closely connected to his classmates, regularly attending monthly dinners and annual reunions with fellow athletes and graduates. During his high school years, he played offensive right tackle on the varsity football team and earned a First Team All–Morris County selection.

After graduation, Norbert followed in his father’s footsteps and began a career as a mason. He completed coursework in architectural drawing at Fairleigh Dickinson University and graduated from a New York City trade school, becoming a skilled mason and tile contractor. His passion for the trades led him to a 23year career as an instructor at the Morris County Vocational Technical School, where he taught architectural drawing, drafting, masonry, and tile. A respected member of BAC Local 4 for many years, Norbert eventually established his own business, earning the trust of countless friends and customers through his craftsmanship, honesty, and his motto:“No job too small.”

Norby proudly served in the Army National Guard for more than nine years, rising to the rank of Sergeant before being honorably discharged in July 1964. He later became a member of the American Legion.

Norbert met the love of his life, Gloria (Tufaro), at the Twin Hickory Ski Club in Nutley, NJ. They were married on April 29th, 1967, at Our Lady of Mount Virgin Church in Garfield, NJ, and would have celebrated 59 years of marriage this coming April.

Deeply rooted in his community, Norbert treasured his monthly lunches with fellow Boonton High School graduates and was known for his kindness, generosity, and ability to make everyone feel welcome. He was a devoted Catholic who participated in Cornerstone, supported the church and many charitable causes, and faithfully attended weekly Mass with Gloria at St. Ann’s R.C. Church in Parsippany.

Norbert enjoyed many fishing trips “down the shore” with his father and family. He loved bowling and was an avid baseball fan, attending countless New York Yankees games with family and friends while also keeping an eye on the New York Mets—experiencing the highs and lows of both teams over the years.

Norbert learned to play the piano as a young boy, sparking a lifelong appreciation for music and the arts. He loved going to musicals, plays, and shows, especially when sharing those experiences with Gloria, the family, and close friends.

A dedicated member of the Boy Scouts of America, Norbert served as Scoutmaster of Troop 5, where he guided his son, Glenn, and many other young men in earning their Eagle Scout rank. He was also an honored camper and a Brotherhood member of the Order of the Arrow.

In his later years, Norbert cherished time spent with family, friends, and neighbors. He especially enjoyed playing Bingo twice a week at the Parsippany Community Center. His favorite number was B5, and whenever it was called, the room would erupt with, “Norby’s Number!” Five was always his lucky number.

Norbert is survived by his loving wife, Gloria; his daughter, Karen (Sunderhaft), and her husband, David; and his son, Glenn. His greatest joys were his grandchildren: Jessica (25), Robert (23), Samantha (20), and Sophia (15).
