Obituary of Samuel J. Cruz
With heavy hearts we share the passing of Samuel Cruz.
Samuel J. “Sammy” Cruz, 22, passed away while courageously saving another in rough waters during Spring Break in Puerto Rico. His life reflected the words he lived by: “Greater love has no one than this: to lay down one’s life for one’s friends” (John 15:13).
Born July 24, 2003, to Bessy and Henry Cruz, Sammy was raised in Morristown and graduated from Morristown High School. He was the first in his family to attend college and was proudly preparing to graduate from NYIT this May. He embraced every opportunity, building lasting friendships and fully experiencing college life.
A man of deep faith, Sammy grew up in Iglesia Evangelica Hispana since he was a kid and recently, he became an active member of Iglesia Alianza Church. He loved music—especially gospel and jazz—and played both drums and bass guitar. He also enjoyed sports, skateboarding, and hiking, and chose to study in New York City to remain close to his beloved family.
Sammy is survived by his parents, Bessy and Henry Cruz; his cherished sister, Jackeline Cruz, his older brother Luis Felipe in Honduras and many loving relatives and dear friends.
Sunday evenings services will be livestreamed.
His family is heartbroken yet grateful for the outpouring of love and support. Donations in Sammy’s memory may be made to the Go Fund Me established to assist the family during this difficult time.
