Obituary of Kevin A. Couch
Kevin A. Couch passed away surrounded by the love of his family at his home on Tuesday, August 4, 2026. He was 71.
Born in Hoboken and raised in Secaucus NJ, Kevin was the beloved son of the late Arthur and Concetta Couch. He grew up alongside his sister, Claudia, and played quarterback for St. Joe’s High School Blue Jays in West New York before attending Fordham University. He went on to earn his law degree from Seton Hall University School of Law, beginning a distinguished legal career built on integrity, compassion, and an unwavering commitment to helping others.
In December of 1989, Kevin married the love of his life, Patricia Totaro. Together they built a beautiful life in Montville, where they raised their two daughters. Everything Kevin did was for his family. He worked tirelessly to provide them with every opportunity.
He served as the town attorney in Secaucus and established the law firm of O’Toole & Couch in Whippany, where he was a respected attorney, trusted advocate, and valued colleague.
Life was meant to be lived, and Kevin embraced every opportunity for adventure. He found his greatest peace on the water, whether boating, water skiing, or spending treasured summers on Long Beach Island, Cape Cod and Hilton Head. He had a passion for skiing and never shied away from a thrill, always eager for the next adventure. One of his family’s treasured memories was spending a weekend together at the Jersey Shore last summer, where they shared time by the water, and one final ride together on the Ferris wheel.
Kevin was a loyal NY Jets and Georgia Bulldogs fan. He loved music and his record collection reflected both his passion for it and the joy he found in sharing it with family and friends. He was also an avid golfer. A longtime member of the Upper Montclair Country Club, he enjoyed a good…or a bad day on the golf course with his buddies.
Even after being diagnosed with dysautonomia, Kevin refused to let the disease define him. He continued to live life to its fullest, embracing every experience with determination, courage, and optimism and selfless appreciation for his many adoring caregivers. He remained the same adventurous spirit, never allowing his diagnosis to diminish his love of life or his commitment to those around him.
Above all else, Kevin was immensely proud of his family. He would do absolutely anything for his Patti and the girls, and they were the center of his world.
Kevin leaves behind his devoted and loving wife of 36 years, Patricia (Totaro) Couch; his adored daughters, Noel Couch and Mikayla Couch (Jack Donovan); his dear sister, Claudia Couch (Jerry Shaw); his nephews, Matthew and Steven Shaw; his “brother,” Lou D’Agosto; and many cherished friends, neighbors, colleagues, and countless others whose lives were enriched by knowing him.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Monday, August 10, at 12:00 noon at St. Pius X Roman Catholic Church, 24 Changebridge Road, Montville, New Jersey. Guests are kindly requested to arrive to the church 15–20 minutes before Mass to allow time for parking and seating.
