Obituary of SISTER CAROL PATRICIA JOHNSTON

Sister Carol Patricia Johnston, a Sister of Charity of St. Elizabeth, died peacefully, Monday evening, March 25, 2013 at St. Anne Villa in Convent Station, following a long illness. She was 68.
Sister Carol Johnston was born in Newark, New Jersey, the daughter of Alexander and Helen (McNaboe) Johnston. She entered the Sisters of Charity on September 6, 1962 and was a member for 51 years.
She graduated from the College of Saint Elizabeth, Convent Station, NJ with a B.A. degree in History, from the Catholic University of America, Washington, DC; with an M.A. degree in Sociology and Anthropology; and, from Fairleigh Dickinson University, Teaneck with an MPA degree.
In 2008, Sister Carol received the Citizen Excellence in Community Involvement Award given by the U.S. Federal Government EPA for her contributions to superfund cleanup efforts. She was also very involved with Religious On the Water (ROW) in helping religious congregations who have property adjacent to the ocean to preserve the NJ shore.
Sister Carol was an Educator and a Director of Special Programs in the State of New Jersey and in the country of Mexico. She served as a teacher at the College of Saint Elizabeth, Convent Station, NJ. She was Director of Special Programs and Planning in Passaic County. She served as Assistant to the Provost at Fairleigh Dickinson University, Teaneck. She provided technical assistance to a women's group at Lincoln Park Nursing Home, Lincoln Park. She was Director of the Women and Family Program at St. Columba Neighbor Club, Newark. She was a program manager at Mary's Pence, Metuchen,
Sister Carol spent many years in Mexico City, Mexico working with women's groups providing technical assistance to women's cooperatives. She was a Project Director at the Center for Encounters and Dialogue Morelos, and in Jaraqua, A.C., Mexico City. She served as Administrator of Comite del D.F. de Ayuda a Refugiados Guatemaltecos.
Sister Carol was a member of the Advisory Board at her beloved alma mater St. Vincent Academy, Newark. Most recently she was project and planning director for the Ironbound Community Corp., Newark.
She is survived by the Sisters of Charity; her niece, Diane O'Donnell; nephews, Raymond and Patrick Mulhern, their spouses, and children.
