Obituary of JOHN M. SZALUS

John M. Szalus, 71, died Tuesday morning, July 16, 2013 at St. Clare's Hospital in Denvillle following an extended illness. Born and raised in Newark, he had lived in Irvington before moving to the Lake Hiawatha section of Parsippany in 1966. Mr. Szalus was a United States Air Force Veteran, having served in Libya and Africa during the 1960's. He was an automotive electrician for Public Service Electricity and Gas in Raritan for 38 years, before his retirement in 2000. Mr. Szalus was active with Ameican Legion Post # 249 in Lake Hiawatha where he served three terms as Commander. He was also a member of the Morris County American Legion, the 40 & 8th Club, the Polish Club of Whippany, and the Public Service Retired Employees Club. John was also active with the Boyscouts of America and enjoyed presenting the American Legion Scouting Scholarships each year. He is survived by his wife of 47 years, Carol A. Szalus (nee Miterko); two children, Carolyn Mayer and her husband Kevin of Hamburg and John M Szalus Jr. and his wife Quanhua of North Arlington; a sister, Joan Januszkiewicz of VA.; his mother-in-law Jean B. Miterko of West Caldwell; and two grandchildren, Matthew Mayer and Lina Szalus.
