Sister Therese Dorothy Leland, a Sister of Charity of Saint Elizabeth, died Sunday, November 9, 2014 at Saint Anne Villa, Convent Station, NJ at the age of 99.
Sister Therese Dorothy was born in Brooklyn, NY, the daughter of James and Dorothy (Martin) Leland. She entered the Sisters of Charity on September 8, 1936 and was a member for 78 years.
She graduated from the College of Saint Elizabeth, Convent Station, NJ with a B.S. degree in Elementary Education.
Sister Therese Dorothy served in the education and religious ministries in New Jersey and New York. She served as a teacher at St. Patrick School, Newark; St. John School, Trenton; and St. Aloysius School, Newark. She was Principal in St. Charles Borromeo School, Newark, and in St. Agnes School, Paterson. She then served as a Provincial Councilor and a Provincial Superior for the Sisters of Charity of Saint Elizabeth. She was a team member of the House of Prayer Experience (HOPE) in Manhasset, NY and Asbury Park, NJ. She was school secretary in Little Flower School, Berkeley Heights and a staff member at Bethlehem Hermitage, Chester and at Xavier Retreat Center, Convent Station. She retired to Saint Anne Villa in 1998 where she resided until her death.
She is survived by the Sisters of Charity; her nephew, Stephen (Jo-Anne) Dudsak, Wood Ridge, NJ; her niece Dorothy (Tony) Lucia, North Bergen, NJ; three grandnieces and one great grandnephew. She was predeceased by her sister, Catherine Dudsak.
