Sister Cecilia Burns, 82, a Sister of Charity of Saint Elizabeth, died December 20, 2014 at Saint Anne Villa, Convent Station, NJ.
Sister Cecilia was born in Jersey City, NJ, the daughter of Joseph and Adele Nolan Burns; and her beloved stepfather, Vito Sabatini. She entered the Sisters of Charity on April 2, 1950 and was a member for 64 years.
Sister Cecilia graduated from the College of Saint Elizabeth, Convent Station, NJ with a B.S. degree in Elementary Education. Sister Cecilia earned both M.S. and APD degrees in Religious Education from Fordham University, Bronx, NY.
Sister Cecilia served in the ministry of Education as a teacher in Saint Francis School, Ridgefield, NJ; Our Lady of Sorrows School, South Orange, NJ; Saint Columba, Newark, NJ; Sacred Heart Elementary School, Jersey City, NJ and Saint Teresa School, Summit, NJ. She served as CCD Coordinator in Sacred Heart Parish, Vailsburg, NJ and in Saint Paul Greenville, Jersey City. She was the Religious Education Coordinator in Saint Vincent, Bayonne, NJ. She was Director of Religious Education in Saint Philip the Apostle School, Saddle Brook, NJ. Sister Cecilia served as the Administrator of the Eugene Kennedy Residence, in Pompton Lakes, NJ; a Pastoral Associate in Saint Anthony of Padua Parish, Butler, NJ, and a chaplain at the Hackensack University Medical Center, Hackensack, NJ. Sister retired to Saint Anne Villa, Convent Station, NJ, in 2004 where she resided until her death.
She is survived by the Sisters of Charity; her brother Joseph and his wife Mary Lou; several nephews, a niece; grandnephews, grandnieces and many dear friends.
