Sister Madeline Kennedy, 88, formerly Sister Mary Joannes, a Sister of Charity of Saint Elizabeth, died Friday, January 2, 2015 at Saint Anne Villa, Convent Station, NJ.
Sister Madeline was born in Newark, New Jersey, the daughter of James and Agnes E. (Powers) Kennedy. She entered the Sisters of Charity on March 25, 1945 and was a member for 69 years.
Sister Madeline graduated from the College of Saint Elizabeth, Convent Station, NJ with a B.S. degree in Elementary Education and from William Paterson University, Wayne, NJ with an M.A. degree in Reading. Sister Madeline was an educator in the states of Massachusetts and New Jersey. She served in St. Joseph School, Roxbury, MA. In New Jersey, she taught at St. Matthew School, Ridgefield; Our Lady of Grace School, Hoboken; St. John School, Paterson; Holy Trinity Elementary School, Fort Lee; Holy Trinity School, Hackensack; and St. Peter School, Belleville. She was principal in St. Joseph School, West Orange. She served as a caregiver in Manchester, NJ and retired to Caritas Community in Jersey City, NJ. She moved to Saint Anne Villa, Convent Station in 2009 where she resided until her death.
She is survived by the Sisters of Charity; her nephew, Anthony Conforti (Rosina), her niece, Sunnie Kurtz, nieces, nephews, grandnieces, and grandnephews.
