Sister Jean Hemmer, 93, (formerly Sister Jean Marie), a Sister of Charity of Saint Elizabeth, died July 2, 2015 at Saint Anne Villa, Convent Station, NJ.
Sister Jean was born in Newark, N.J., the daughter of Max J. and Grace (Callaghan) Hemmer. She entered the Sisters of Charity on September 8, 1947 and was a member for 67 years.
Sister Jean graduated from the College of Saint Elizabeth, Convent Station, NJ with a BA degree in English, from Seton Hall University, South Orange, NJ with an MA degree in English, and from Fordham University, Bronx, NY, with a PhD in English.
Sister Jean was an educator in the State of New Jersey. She served as an English teacher at St. Michael's School, Newark and Immaculate Conception High School, Montclair. At the College of Saint Elizabeth she served as instructor, Associate Professor, Professor, and Chairman of the English Department. She also served as Assistant Dean of Studies and as an Academic Advisor. Sister Jean served at the College of St. Elizabeth for 46 years. From 2006 to 2009 she was a volunteer in the Archives of the Sisters of Charity, Convent Station, NJ. She retired to Saint Anne Villa, Convent Station, NJ in 2009 where she resided until her death.
She is survived by the Sisters of Charity; nieces Amy Vreeland and Martha Vreeland, and a grandniece and grandnephew. She was predeceased by her parents, Max and Grace Hemmer; her sisters, Grace Garrigan and Joan Vreeland; and her nephew Christopher Vreeland.
