Sister Margaret Doherty, 92, a Sister of Charity of Saint Elizabeth, died November 12, 2015 at Saint Anne Villa, Convent Station, NJ.
Sister Margaret was born in Elizabeth, NJ, the daughter of John and Rose (Sharkey) Doherty. She entered the Sisters of Charity September 8th, 1940 and was a member for 75 years.
Sister Margaret graduated from the College of Saint Elizabeth, Convent Station, NJ with a B.A. degree in Latin; from Fordham University, Bronx, NY with a M.A. degree in Latin; from Iona College, New Rochelle, NY with a M.S. degree in education counseling and from Manhattan College, Riverdale, NY with a M.A. degree in Theology. She was an educator in New Jersey, Connecticut, New York and in Puerto Rico. She served as a teacher at St. Mary Elementary School, Waterbury, CT; St. Anthony School, Guayama, PR; the Collegio de Sangre, Corazon Santurce, PR; Academy of the Sacred Heart, Hoboken, NJ; Holy Trinity High School, Westfield; Marylawn of the Oranges, South Orange; the College of Saint Elizabeth, Convent Station, NJ. She was the assistant Administrator and the Administrator of St. Elizabeth Hospital, Elizabeth; Chaplain in Lutheran Medical Center, Brooklyn, NY; Chaplain in St. Mary Hospital. She resided at the Convent of Saint Elizabeth, Convent Station and retired to St. Anne Villa, Convent Station in 2008 where she resided until her death.
In 1967, the Sisters of Charity were divided into three geographical areas called provinces. Sister Margaret was appointed the Provincial leader for the area called the Southern Province. In this position she helped to lead the Sisters of Charity in the process of changes to make their style of living and serving God's people more reflective of the spirit and charism of their founders. Sister Margaret was a visionary leader and had great influence on shaping the Sisters of Charity to respond to the needs and challenges of the times. Sister Margaret served as provincial from 1967 through 1973.
Sister Margaret was predeceased by her parents, her sister Mary Gillen Barbieri, Esq., her nephews, Denis Gillen and John Gillen.
She is survived by the Sisters of Charity; her grandnephews David Gillen (Lynn), John J. Gillen III, and grandnieces Patricia Gillen and Allison Gillen, and great grand nephews and nieces.
