Sister Mary Agnes Hanley, 94, a Sister of Charity of Saint Elizabeth, died Thursday, November 3, 2016 at Morristown Medical Center, Morristown, NJ.
Sister Mary Agnes (Josephine) was born in Jersey City, NJ, the daughter of Patrick and Kathleen (Cahill) Hanley. She entered the Sisters of Charity on September 8, 1940 and was a member for 76 years.
Sister Mary Agnes graduated from the College of Saint Elizabeth, Convent Station, NJ with a B.S. degree in Education and was an educator in New Jersey. Sister Mary Agnes served as a teacher at St. Mary Elementary School, Nutley; Sacred Heart School, Bloomfield; St. Mary School, Jersey City; St. Patrick School, Jersey City; Immaculate Conception School, Montclair; Sacred Heart School, Newark; and at St. Rose of Lima School, Newark. She was Admitting Clerk at St. Joseph Hospital & Medical Center, Paterson. After that, she worked in the Treasurer's Office, St. Elizabeth Convent, Convent Station. She was first Dean of Students and then the Attendance Person at the Academy of Saint Elizabeth, Convent Station. In 2015, she retired to Saint Anne Villa, Convent Station.
Sister Mary Agnes was predeceased by her parents; brothers: Patrick, Gerard and Brendan; sisters: Rita McKaig, Anna Haab, Phyllis Moran, Sister Mary Regina Hanley, SC, and Sister Margaret Hanley, SC; and nephews: Robert and Joseph Moran.
She is survived by the Sisters of Charity; her nieces: Ruth Edone and Jennifer Moran; grandnieces, grandnephews, great grandnieces and great grandnephews.
