Sister Maureen Matthews, 81, (formerly Sister James Agnes) a Sister of Charity of Saint Elizabeth, died Saturday, December 17, 2016 at The Villa at Florham Park, Florham Park, N.J.
Sister Maureen was born in Paterson, NJ, the daughter of James and Agnes (Kelly) Matthews. She entered the Sisters of Charity on August 20, 1959 and was a member for 57 years.
Sister Maureen graduated from the College of Saint Elizabeth, Convent Station, N.J. with a B.A. degree in English, from Seton Hall University, South Orange, NJ with a M.A. degree in Secondary Education and from Columbia University, New York, NY with a Ed.D degree in Curriculum/Teaching-Youth Ed. Sister Maureen was an Educator in the State of New Jersey and New York. She served as a teacher at Sisters of Charity Prep School, and the Academy of Saint Elizabeth, Convent Station and Instructor of Education, Columbia University, New York, NY. From 1974 -1992, she held several positions in the Education Department at the College of Saint Elizabeth where she also served four years as Assistant Dean of Studies. In 1992, she became a family caregiver in Hawthorne. She retired to the Villa in 2013 where she resided until her death.
She is survived by the Sisters of Charity; her brother, James Matthews and his wife, Christine of Paramus, NJ; her niece, Jamie and her husband, Tom of Dumont, NJ; and nephews, Peter J. Matthews of Brooklyn, NY and Paul Matthews of Austin, Texas. She is also survived by three grandnephews.
