Sister Maureen Killough, 82, formerly Sister Rose Michael, a Sister of Charity of Saint Elizabeth, died Wednesday, December 21, 2016 at the Villa at Florham Park, Florham Park, N.J.
Sister Maureen was born in Jersey City, NJ, the daughter of Walter and Julia Donnelly Killough. She entered the Sisters of Charity on September 24, 1952 and was a member for 64 years.
Sister Maureen graduated from the College of Saint Elizabeth, Convent Station, N.J., with a B.A. degree in History, and received an M.A. degree in Elementary Education from Seton Hall University, South Orange, NJ. Sister Maureen served in the education ministry in New Jersey. She served as a teacher at St. Margaret of Scotland School, Morristown; St. Cecilia Elementary School, Englewood; St. Patrick School, Jersey City. Sister served as Principal in Sacred Heart Elementary School, Jersey City for twenty six years, from 1972 - 1998. She continued her ministry to students and families until 2009. She retired to the Villa in 2009 where she resided until her death.
Sister Maureen was an exemplary leader in elementary education. She was a compassionate educator with a quick smile and great sense of humor. She saw the uniqueness of each child and family and responded to their needs. She was a model of charity to her staff, parents, and the many partners in ministry.
She is survived by the Sisters of Charity of Saint Elizabeth; her sisters, Sister Margaret Killough, SC and Julia Shevlino of Brick, NJ; her brother Walter and his wife Eleanor of Virginia; many nephews and nieces.
