Sister Mary Agnita Chonko, 85, a Sister of Charity of Saint Elizabeth, died Saturday, January 21, 2017 at Morristown Memorial Hospital, Morristown, NJ. Sister Mary Agnita was born in Bayonne, New Jersey, the daughter of Andrew and Mary (Angus) Chonko. She entered the Sisters of Charity on October 1, 1950 and was a member for 66 years. Sister Mary Agnita was an educator in elementary schools in New Jersey. She served as teacher at St. Patrick, Jersey City; St. Peter's, Belleville; St. Cecilia, Englewood; Holy Trinity, Hackensack; St. Peter, New Brunswick; Our Lady of Grace, Hoboken; St. John, Orange; Our Lady of Visitation, Paramus; Sacred Heart, Rochelle Park; St. Lucy, Jersey City and St. Mary's, Jersey City. Due to ill health, in 1966 she retired to St. Anne Villa, Convent Station, where she resided until her death. Sister Agnita was a kind woman with a good sense of humor. She loved teaching and missed her students when her failing health necessitated her leaving active ministry. She was attentive to the nurses, staff and sisters at Saint Anne Villa and did her best to share the charism of charity with all whom she interacted. Sister Agnita was predeceased by her brother Andrew; and two sisters: Mary T. Chonko and Ann Dolan. She is survived by the Sisters of Charity; a niece, Dolores Suminski, and a cousin, Helen Spisak.
