Hugh M. Whelan, 73, of Sanford, NC, passed away on Sunday, August 20, 2017. He was born to the late Patrick & Winifred Whelan on October 26, 1943, in Ireland. Hugh was a veteran of the U.S. Army and worked at Verizon for 40 years. He retired in December 2003 and spent most of his golden years on the golf course.
Hugh is survived by his long time partner in crime, Joann Bruno; three children: Brian Whelan, of Denville, NJ; Christine & Raymond Bott of Montville, NJ; and Karen & Joseph Bott of Spring Lake, NC. He is also survived by three grandchildren: Alyssa Marie, Cory John, & Giada Marie; and one great granddaughter: Sophia Marie; Brothers: James & Stacy Whelan, Kevin & Peta Whelan, Sisters: Catherine Giannone, Winifred (Una) & Robert Ott, plus many nieces and nephews, who will miss him greatly.
