Please share a memory of SISTER to include in a keepsake book for family and friends.
Sister Jean Young, formerly Sister Peter Mary, 85, a Sister of Charity of Saint Elizabeth, died October 20, 2017 at Morristown Memorial Hospital, Morristown, NJ. Sister Jean was born in Newark, NJ, the daughter of Charles J. and Teresa (Weingert) Young. She entered the Sisters of Charity on October 1, 1950 and was a member for 67 years. Sister Jean graduated from the College of Saint Elizabeth, Convent Station, NJ with a B.A. degree in English; from the Catholic University of America, Washington, DC with a M.A. degree in Speech and Drama; and, from Manhattan College, Riverdale, N.Y. with a M.A. degree in Religious Studies. Sister Jean began her teaching ministry at St. Mary Elementary School, Dumont and then went to secondary education in Jersey City, NJ at St. Mary High School, St. Aloysius High School, and the Academy of St. Aloysius, Jersey City. Sister Jean was a wonderful English, Business, and Religious Studies instructor. She was a patient and kind teacher who listened to her students and tried to instill in them both knowledge of the subject matter and of themselves as good young men and women. She enjoyed the classroom experience and most of all enjoyed attending the various activities in which her students participated. Sister Jean loved to walk, especially in Lincoln Park, where she would encounter members of the parish, students involved in different sports, and residents of the area. Sister Jean utilized her Religious Studies degree in the classroom and also in her ministry as religious education coordinator at All Saints School, St. Michael Parish, and in the Parish of the Resurrection, all in Jersey City. In her ministry in the downtown Jersey City parishes Sister Jean responded to the needs of homeless men and women, young adults, immigrants and the poor in every spiritual and economic dimension. Her kindness, sensitivity, and sense of humor were appreciated by all with whom she came in contact. Sister Jean faithfully and lovingly ministered to the people of Jersey City for over sixty years. Due to health challenges in 2003, she retired to what is now The Villa at Florham Park where she resided until her death. She was predeceased by her parents and two sisters, Mary and Rita. She is survived by the Sisters of Charity; her brother Charles Young; nieces Beth Toale and Janice Knapp Poinsett; and many other nieces, nephews, grandnieces and grandnephews. In lieu of flowers, contributions to the Sisters of Charity Development Fund, P.O. Box 476, Convent Station, NJ, 07961-0476 would be greatly appreciated.
