Alfred M. Martin passed away Wednesday morning, April 18, 2018 at his Parsippany home surrounded by his loving family. He was 92.
Alfred was born in West Paterson, NJ on January 28, 1926.
He was predeceased by his father John, mother Mary, sister Carmela, and brother Vince. He is survived by his beloved wife, Marguerite (nee Maniaci); children, Al, Bob, (Jacqui) and Margie; grandchildren, Hannah, Aaronmichael (Kyler), Elijah, Janoah, and Olivea; and one great-grandchild, Kaia. The family extends its heartfelt gratitude for the love and support of Nilda Bonilla and Peter Gonzalez.
Alfred served in the military during the Second World War, enlisting in the Navy at the age of seventeen and serving in the Pacific theater.
He earned a Bachelor's degree from Seton Hall, a Master's degree from New York University and a P.H.D. from Fordham University. He worked in New Jersey education for several decades as well as running education programs for Picatinny Arsenal.
In his retirement, Alfred enjoyed time with his family and published several books on baseball and education, including a biography on his childhood hero, Mel Ott. He was invited to participate in the dedication for a monument erected to Ott in Gretna, Louisiana in 2009. Alfred was an active member of St. Peter the Apostle Church in Parsippany and served as an usher for over fifty years.
