From a colleague in Europe: These are really sad news. Joe was such a good man, always nice to me and a very helpful colleagues in all the projects we worked together. I missed him a lot after his retirement and often thought of him over the years. You may say so to his wife.

This beautiful message from a co-worker (thank you!):
We spent many long hours together at Sandoz and on the road and
I truly admired his unique blend of warmth, dignity, intellect and
humility.
Our first major NDA together was Sandimmune psoriasis. Joe was a
wonderful partner and mentor on the project. There was an overwhelming
amount of data and we were given insufficient time and resources to meet
our deadlines. Each time we met, Joe and I would look at each other and
say in unison ³there¹s no way out of this!² Traveling together to London
Heathrow airport we got ³a sign from on high² and we knew everything
would work out ok - and it did. It was our first of several dermatology
drug approval.

Lisa, thank you so much for taking the time to add this comment. It means a lot. Just in the couple days before he passed, I shared your message with him (about being a part of the family!) and he smiled both times. I am so grateful for parents who wanted to make sure our friends always felt home at our home, and I am grateful to friends like you who have taken the time to appreciate that heart of his/theirs.

Joe was my best friend and colleague for over 20 years. We worked together as statisticians in pharmaceutical development. He taught me much about practical application of statistics in clinical trials, and about strategic thinking, as well as about life and managing relationships in a high pressure technical environment. There were occasions when we stayed at work for 72 hours straight to meet deadlines. When Joe was recovering from colon cancer he would work with me at his home while laying on the floor with output laying all around us. He lived a highly moral and ethical life, always conducting himself as a gentleman and scholar. Joe's death leaves a deep and great void in my soul. I count myself extremely fortunate to have known Joe and his family, and sincerely and deeply express my sympathy for their great loss.

Beautiful and thankful for this: Your dad and I were talking about life after I graduated from college. He told me to swing away for anything I'm passionate about now because later I might not be able to. Life changing advice. Forever grateful, which I pass onto young adults today. Love this message from a friend: I remember the first time coming over to your parents' home. Your dad offered me a Japanese beer from the frig in the shape of of a keg.
