Sister Joan Lowden, 87, formerly Sister Catherine Veronica, a Sister of Charity of Saint Elizabeth, died Wednesday, April 8, 2020 at Saint Joseph's Healthcare and Rehab Center, Cedar Grove, NJ. Sister Joan was born in Newark, New Jersey, the daughter of Thomas and Sophia (Brysett) Lowden. She entered the Sisters of Charity on October 1, 1950 and was a member for 69 years. Sister Joan graduated from the College of Saint Elizabeth, Convent Station, New Jersey with a B.A. degree in English. Sister Joan was an Educator in New Jersey. She served as a teacher at Sacred Heart School, Jersey City; St. Bridget School, Jersey City; St. Peter High School, New Brunswick; St. James School, Newark; Sacred Heart School, New Brunswick; Academy of St. Elizabeth, Convent Station; St. Aloysius School, Jersey City; and was a Volunteer at Our Lady of Guadalupe Academy, Elizabeth. A dedicated Sister of Charity, Sister Joan was loved by the students she taught and was a loving presence in the hearts of many. She is survived by the Sisters of Charity; 2 nephews, David and Charles Thieme; and grandnieces and grandnephews. In lieu of flowers, contributions to the Sisters of Charity Development Fund, P.O. Box 476, Convent Station, NJ 07961-0476 would be greatly appreciated. IN THE INTEREST OF PUBLIC HEALTH, ALL SERVICES AND INTERMENT AT HOLY FAMILY CEMETERY, CONVENT STATION WILL BE PRIVATE. A PUBLIC MEMORIAL MASS WILL BE ANNOUNCED IN THE FUTURE. PLEASE KEEP THE FAMILY AND THE SISTERS OF CHARITY IN YOUR PRAYERS AT THIS TIME.
