Sister Julie (Julia) Scanlan, 86, formerly Sister Marie Patricia, a Sister of Charity of Saint Elizabeth, died Monday, April 13, 2020 at Saint Joseph's Healthcare and Rehab Center, Cedar Grove, NJ.
Sister Julia was born in Boston, Massachusetts, the daughter of Thomas and Mary (Kelly) Scanlan. She entered the Sisters of Charity on October 1, 1951 and was a member for 68 years.
Sister Julia graduated from the College of Saint Elizabeth, Convent Station, NJ with a B.A. degree in English; from The Catholic University of America, Washington, DC with a M.A. degree in English; from Fordham University, Bronx, NY with a M.A. Degree in Spirituality and from Rutgers University, New Brunswick, NJ with a MSW in Social Work. Sister Julia was an educator in New Jersey. She served as a teacher at St. Paul of the Cross School, Jersey City; Our Lady of Good Counsel School, Washington Twp; St. Mary School, Plainfield; DePaul Catholic High School, Wayne; All Saints School, Jersey City and St. Mary High School, Jersey City. She served as Counselor, Youth Minister and Social Worker at the Academy of the Sacred Heart, Hoboken. She was Director of Seton Associates at the Convent of St. Elizabeth, Convent Station and Director of the Peace Program at St. Patrick School & Assumption/ All Saints School, Jersey City. In 2011, she volunteered at Dr. Lena Edwards Charter School, Jersey City. She retired to Saint Joseph's Healthcare and Rehab Center.
She is survived by the Sisters of Charity of Saint Elizabeth, her sister Eileen Padua (Queenie) and brother Joseph Scanlan, sisters-in-law, Kathleen, Nellie and Janet. Sister Julie (Julia) was predeceased by her sister Patricia Glynn and brothers Michael, Kevin, Dennis and Thomas.
During her teaching career, Sister Julie encouraged the students to make a Peace Pledge. "I pledge that I will treat every person with respect, kindness and dignity as I would like to be treated." These words
reflected the life of Sister Julie as she lived the mission of boundless charity.
