I've never met a father who was so welcoming in just his presence. When he first visited us in San Diego at the lorca house, I never felt like i had to warm up to him. He was cracking jokes from the minute he walked through the door. I remember one time i was sick with the cold and he walked into my room with a bottle of spirytus and said "look, i have medicine, you want to take a shot?" Right now i am wishing i had a shot of that so i can cheers to his beautiful life. Never was there a time when i didn't see a smile on his face. Not only did he make me feel at home when i came to visit in new jersey, but he made my home in san diego feel complete when he came to visit us. It was almost like we had a house father figure. Knowing that I won't be able to see that big smile or hear all his funny responses again, saddens me. But i know he is at peace now. My love goes to Emily, Barbara, Matt, and Chris, and babcia.

Mr. Darek would always greet me with a huge smile and a "Hi Taas!", whenever I had the pleasure of seeing him. He never failed to, unknowingly, make us laugh with his pronunciation of words, dance moves, or funny faces. He was the type of man who would do anything for his family. He was a great friend, husband, and father. I am blessed to have known him and I will miss the moments that we shared. Rest In Peace Mr. Darek. I love this family so so much!!

The Skaja family sends its love to the Bochens. Darek was a kind and caring man who clearly loved his family very much. We will always remember his fun personality and big smile. He taught us about vodka and his cold remedy, which was also mainly vodka. We will miss Darek but look forward to many years of friendship with Barbara, Chris, Matthew & Emily.

What a beautiful family. Their kindness, caring, and love for one another is a testament to Barbara and Darek. What a blessing to have such great friends. I first met Barbara in the hospital where we both worked and we became friends. I then met Darek and Chris, their awesome little boy and Barbara's sweet "Mom" , as I came to call her. My husband Joe and I always felt so welcome and comfortable in their home. Darek always had a smile on his face and such a wonderful contagious laugh. He and Barbara were so happy to have their second child, Matthew, and we were so honored when asked to be Godparents. Then such great news, a daughter, a little sister, such excitement and joy for all. Joe and I had such a great time at all of their parties. There are so many wonderful memories that we will forever cherish. The one that touched our hearts and really exemplifies the kind of person that Darek was is the time when Matthew was taking care of our dog, Duchess, at their home while we were away. She was not allowed to run or have any strenuous activity until her sprain healed. He took the time to walk her and increased the amount until she regained her strength. He would say what a good dog. He had me laughing when he told the story about her trying to jump over the gate, and eventually she did, so she could go upstairs when they went to bed. She would also run up the other stairs to Mom's place. They all spent time with Duchess and truly provided a loving home for her. We will forever be grateful for the love and attention that she received. Darek will be missed very much, our heartfelt condolences to his entire family. Each and everyone of you will continue to be in our prayers. May he rest in Peace

We were shaken to the core with news that our friend Darek left us and was with God. Today we said a final farewell to our dear friend as we grieve with Barbara, Chris, Matt, Emily, Czeslawa, and Darek's family in Poland.....and, yes, he still had a smile on his face as so many of you commented in your own memories. That smile was special. That smile conveyed PEACE which cast a calm and peaceful spirit on us all.
As we reminisce of our friendship, so many wonderful memories keep flooding in....how Barbara and I met at the park when our girls were 2 years old....I heard them speaking Polish and I inched closer and closer just to meet. That was 20 years ago and we have been friends ever since. We all had someone to hang out with.....Joe had a " buddy" Darek, I had a "girlfriend" Basia, and our little girl who had 3 brothers at home was very happy to have another girl to play with. Gabby and Emily became like "sisters". So many wonderful times spent together just hanging out, partying, dining & dancing, vacationing on the beach, camping, hanging out with the girls' soccer family....Darek cooking on the grill....so many laughable moments that will never be forgotten.
Those of us who know Darek also know how seriously he took his work. He was the master of painting "an artist" as he liked to say. He was very proud of his work and rightfully so. He knew all there was to know about painting. He was also great at spackling and was very confident that he will achieve a great result "sometimes the impossible". Our recent renovation presented a challenging sheetrock/spackling problem. Darek came to assist with spackle bucket in hand. I challenged him thinking there is no way he can just spackle over the very uneven sheetrock (where old met new) and make it come out right without a bump. He said, "Irene, when I get done, the wall will be smooth as a baby's butt" (another of his favorite phrases). Sure enough, the wall was just as he said...so never doubt his talent.
We are blessed to have known him and thankful for the time that we had together. We pray that as he rests in peace with the Lord he watches over his loving family and "paints" their lives with a beautiful array of colors so they could feel the stroke of his touch, his warmth, his presence.
PEACE
Friends forever
Joe, Irene, and Gabby Babula
(with sons Jonathan, Stephen, and Chris)

I only had the pleasure of meeting Darek a few times, but one occasion was during the birth of his beautiful daughter Emily. Every time I saw him, he had a smile on his face. Every time. I loved watching him dance with his lovely bride, my friend Barbara. It is clear that their love was deep and true and unending. My deepest and sincere sympathy to Barbara, Chris, Matt and Em and to all who hold Darek dear.

There are so many memories that come to mind when I think of Mr. Darek. Growing up, he has basically been my second father. Whether it was the way he couldn't say "purple" or his funny dance moves; he never failed to put a smile on my face or make me laugh. I'll never forget the day I accidentally broke his favorite knife when trying to carve a pumpkin. It just snapped in half and he was so upset, but he still forgave me. Mr. Darek, you were an incredible man. You showed so much love for your family and my family. We have shared so many happy moments together and I will always remember you with a big smile on your face. Peace be with you always.
I love you all so much!!

When I received the information about Darek's sudden death my heart filled with immense sadness.
My friendship with Darek and Barbara (Basia) started in Rome more than 30 years ago, and continued during our beginning years in America. Those were the days! Soon afterwards, I became a godmother to Chris, and Darek became the god-father for my daughter, Asia, in the absence of my brother. I distinctly recall the times we spent Christmas and Easter together, and even that time we went on a family vacation to Mexico. Over the years, I have observed Darek to be a quality man whose most important priority was family. He was always calm, friendly, sometimes sarcastic, but always had a good sense of humor and a huge heart.
Darek, you will be deeply missed by everyone. Stay in peace!

The only memory I have of him is meeting him at the Marian Rose Mission dance party at the Hanover Manor. He was a really nice guy. I saw they way he looked at you. It was something special. You two were on the dance floor and looked so happy. It was really, really cute and sweet. I'm glad I got a chance to meet him. I am so thankful of meeting you and Emily during our missions trip last year. My condolences to my "mission mom, sisiter" and family.

In thinking about Darek, I recall a story about the circle of life. When a baby is born, we here on earth celebrate with great joy but the baby comes into the world with a cry, the soul cries having left a world of ease and comfort to journey through a life on earth. At the other end of life, when that person departs, we cry but that soul is at peace. The romantic poet, William Wordsworth, says it best in his poem, Ode, Intimations of Immortality - "There hath pass'd away a glory from the earth."
To Barbara, Chris, Matthew, Emily and the whole family, may the memory of your husband/father (son, brother, son-in-law, friend and sibling) be a blessing to you each and every day. Although he may not be seen in person, he will always be with you in your hearts.
Sending a hug and all the strength you need in the coming days

I just texted Derek couple weeks ago to come in for the annual painting and staining. I pulled a muscle and am doing PT. Give me a couple of weeks was Derek's reply. Which was fine. But one great memory now: We met on the soccer fields. Our daughters played on same team. The last time I saw Emily and Chris they were helping Dad paint the interior of our house. The little girl I remembered was up on a two story ladder painting my ceiling. Derek must have been so happy and proud.

I will miss having him in my yoga classes. I will miss his smile. I will miss him seeking my advice regarding his various aches and pains. Mostly I will miss his kindness and his beautiful spirit . He painted the interior of my home. His pride in his work was inspirational. I did a tile grouting job in my bathroom and he told my wife Jane that I had done a very good job. I was, of course so happy to have his approval.
I will miss you Darek. To live in the hearts of those left behind, is not to die.

I will never forget the time he came to my house to help me with a spackling job in my bathroom. He looked at the wall that was spackled and said "Who did this looks like sh@#$! I replied that I had done the spackling to which he responded "oh it's not so bad..." He was always great with the zingers and the one liners but he was always no nonsense and brutally honest which is one of the qualities I loved about him. Another time I asked him how he managed to spray paint the moldings in his house without the paint dripping down in the process to which he replied..."I just did it right!" He was a great man and neighbor and he will be sorely missed. Rest in peace Darek!

I was so saddened when Chris contacted me to share the very sad news. Derek was our painter for years. My late husband first met Derek when he was in the midst of redecorating his home. Derek continued to paint for us throughout our marriage and was so supportive when my husband died in 2011. Derek was truly a renaissance man. Derek's talents continue to be the gold standard - I will never meet a painter as skilled and artistic in his craft. As I spoke with Chris this morning I was so moved. Chris's thoughtfulness, kindness and warmth was a wonderful tribute to his Dad. The loving way in which he spoke of his Dad, Mom, Matthew and Emily would make his Dad so very proud. My thoughts and prayers to Barbara, Christopher, Matthew and Emily. I will raise my glass of vodka this evening and give thanks for having the great fortune of knowing Derek. Be well and stay safe. I remember Mr. Bochen to be a friendly, funny, loving guy who ALWAYS welcomed me into his home. He gave me a big hug every time I came over or was leaving and said "It's good to see you" and I knew he meant it. It was always a joy to be around him. I remember one time, Mr. Bochen, Chris, and I were sitting on the deck and Mr. Bochen was laying in the hammock that he loved so much. I remember feeling relaxed and comfortable in that moment just hanging out with him with a couple of beers and good conversation. I'll always miss him. RIP Mr. Bochen.

Darek had been painting for us for the past 20 years, always bringing his talkative, happy personality with him. He once saw me having trouble with my washing machine and went home and brought back a metal hose which he installed for me and told me I'd be set for 5 years. He turned my family on to shopping for Polish food at Piast. To this day the best vodka I've ever tasted was the homemade lemon vodka that Darek made. He brought us a bottle and told me how to make it. Whenever I offered him a cup of coffee he would ask for tea. With lemon. Lol. He was one of a kind and our family will miss this guy.

Byłeś i jesteś moim najukochańszym braciszkiem, którego zawsze będę nosiła głęboko w swoim sercu. Swoją modlitwą będziemy wypraszać łaski, aby Bóg przyjął Cię do swojego królestwa . Jesteśmy i będziemy zawsze blisko z Twoją rodziną: Krzysiem, Mateuszem, Emilką, którą udało wam się z Basią założyć. Dziękuje, że mogłeś być moim bratem.
