George El-Hajj was the quintessential "family man". He dedicated his life to caring for his entire family…his brother and five sisters. His nieces and nephews were HIS children. For years, he'd make the long trek to Massachusetts and to PA. for all of our school events - even the ones that weren't open to the public! He would make his way in to witness some achievement by us - no matter how small or insignificant it was - it was of utmost importance to him because he was always so proud of us.
And, we were proud of him, too. In his professional career as a Chemistry teacher at Irvington H.S, he received many accolades and awards for the passion and excellence he brought to his classroom. He took an active interest in his students' academic and personal lives and mentored and counseled them on to greater achievement.
Music was always one of his loves. My earliest memory is of Uncle George seated at the piano belting out "The Atchison, Topeka and the Sante Fe". He was practicing to audition for the Ted Mack Hour…And no, he never did get to that audition, but he instilled in us his love of music. Every family get-together would include gathering around the piano for a sing-along. He DID finally fulfill his "show biz" ambition by joining a barbershop group. I never saw him happier than with his straw hat and cane, singing "Sweet Adeline" and doing a little soft-shoe on stage.
There were many cultural firsts for us with Uncle George…the first Broadway musical, the first opera, the first museum. He wanted us to experience it all.
Uncle George didn't like the thought of "getting old". He had a zest for life and decided that he liked the age of 45. So, no matter his chronological age - his mind and spirit would remain 45. That youthful attitude was always present in his great sense of humor. He was a fun and funny guy. He always had a good joke or funny story to keep us laughing.
He has always been an important part of our lives…always present for baptisms, first communions, weddings, the birth of our children. And of course, he and Aunt Jean were with us to comfort us when our parents died. They have served as our second parents these man years.
Uncle George was a loving uncle, a man of great passion and conviction, a man of strong faith, who helped us through our life events. He was kind, loving and generous…and he
will be GREATLY missed.

Uncle George was one of my favorite Uncles.. he was actually a cousin but I alway called him Uncle George. He had such a great sense of humor and a wonderful smile. A very gentle and loving soul. It had been many years since seeing him in person but that visit is kept treasured in my heart. I miss him, but now I can talk to him without using "Ma Bell". I love you Uncle George!

My eulogy for my uncle george
We are all here today, to celebrate the life of George elhajj. My uncle George was a noble man. He was always a good person to talk to. He had a different story to tell my sister and me every time he came to our house. Although I live in Massachusetts and he lived in New Jersey he would still make every effort he could to come and visit my family. He has just passed after several months of fighting to stay alive. Being a very strong man he fought every day for his life through those sevral months and is rewarded with a place in heaven to look down at us all as we move on and proceed with our lives. My aunt jean was one of the reasons he was alive for so long. With her guidance she helped him greatly through his struggle. We love you aunt jean and we are all hear for you any time you need us. My Uncle George was a very religious man he would turn to god every night and pray for his guidance. You're in god's hands now but greatly missed down here. I love you uncle George you will never be forgotten and will be thought about every day and kept in our hearts forever.

Dear Jean and Family,
Our families have a history: a very special one. Your dear brother was so important to us as a mentor and a model.
Besides being my teacher, he was my friend. I would come to see him whenever I could. Ans when I was a substitude teacher at IHS while in graduate school, I so enjoyed that next level of friendship. He was so wise. I find myself using his words so often to comfort friends and family; "Do you compliment each other?"; "Do you own the information?; "What's your plan?". He was always there for me, and I loved him for his no nonsense grounds for friendship (Even though he once threw me out of his class for wearing blue jeans on a snow day in the winter of '69). We stayed in touch for over thirty years as I got married, moved to Florida nad started my family. My girls don't know how often the words I speak to them come directly from George. Though they've learned to say, "Is that something your old chemistry teacher taught you?" And I'd laugh (She's an attorney in NYC and my little one just finished college) My mom, Edith, whose memory is significantly challenged, often tells the story of the Jewish War Veteran award. Jeff is one of the top environmental attorneys in Texas, his MS in organic chemistry was certainly a contributing factor.
How you and your brother touched our family. How lucky we were to have learned from him. As a children of Abraham, reserve the most significant prayers for teachers. What a teacher he was. Was a light. G-d bless you and his eternal spirit.
