Leaves of Grass

A few select quotes from the 9th edition 1891
Song of Myself
1
I celebrate myself, and sing myself,
And what I assume you shall assume,
For every atom belonging to me as good belongs to you.
I loafe and invite my soul,
I lean and loafe at my ease observing a spear of summer grass.
....
6
A child said What is the grass? fetching it to me with full hands,
How could I answer the child? I do not know what it is any more than he.
I guess it must be the flag of my disposition, out of hopefull green stuff woven.
Or I guess it is the handkerchief of the Lord,
A scented gift and remembrancer designedly dropt,
Bearing the owner's name someway in the corners, that we may see and remark, and say
Whose?
Or I guess the grass is itself a child, the produced babe of the vegetation.
Or I guess it is a uniform hieroglyphic,
And it means, Sprouting alike in broad zones and narrow zones,
And now it seems to me the beautiful uncut hair of graves.
Tenderly will I use you curling grass,
It may be you transpire from the br**sts of young men,
It may be if I had known them I would have loved them,
It may be you are from old people, or from offspring taken soon out of their mothers' laps.
What do you think have become of the young and old men?
And what do you think have become of the women and children?
They are alive and well somewhere,
The smallest sprout shows there is really no death,
And if ever there was it led forward life, and does not wait at the end to arrest it,
And ceas'd the moment life appear'd.
All goes onward and outward, nothing collapses,
And to die is different from what any one supposed, and luckier.
31
I believe a leaf of grass is no less than a journey-work of the stars,
....
35
Would you hear of an old-time sea-fight?
...
Toward twelve there in the beams of the moon they surrender to us.
38
...
Eleves, I salute you! come forward!
Continue your annotations, continue your questionings.
52
The spotted hawk swoops by and accuses me, he complains of my gab and my loitering.
I too am not a bit tamed, I too am untranslatable,
I sound my barbaric YAWP over the roofs of the world.
....

I'm so sad to hear of your passing. My condolences to your family. Although we have lost touch over the years, I've thought of you from time to time and I have enjoyed reading some of your brilliant writing. My friendship with you began in the 5th grade and I always thought of you as one of the smartest people I've ever met. I remember you telling me that when you couldn't sleep at night you'd spend your time reading the classics. I always admired your loyalty to your friends and your brilliant mind.

Dearest Clare and Larry,
There are no words that we can say that will show what our hearts feel for you and your family during this most difficult of times. One thing we know is that Jesus is welcoming Todd home with open arms. We pray that He strengthens you and showers you with His peace beyond all understanding. Those arms that are holding Todd now are large enough to enfold you all in His grace and mercy.

Love you always and forever baby brother. Lookout for me and our family until we can all be together again. This life is just one blink innthe all seeing eyes of eternity. Till then miss you like a hole in my soul, which I'll nonetheless hold cherished, always close to me. I know deep in my heart that oh yes, we will have a blast making fun of eachother, mom and dad and the the whole dumb world once again. (Can feel you rolling your eyes at this cheesy message ad we speak. All my love, Your Big Sis

While we lost touch many years ago, I did think of you from time to time. I tried to locate you through some of the social networking sites but with no avail. I hope you rest peacefully and are causing as much trouble wherever you may be just like you did at CMS!! Your friends and family are in my thoughts in this saddest of times...
