On Saturday I learned that my dear old friend, Paul passed away. Paul, Joe Shawhan and I grew-up within a block of each other and we were close friends for decades. There were long periods of time when we were inseparable You might say we were partners in crime both figuratively and literally. We shared so many amazing experiences, some of which we kept to ourselves.
We came of age during the 1960's and 70's while the Vietnam War was raging, and Newark was transformed by race riots. Harrison was a relatively close-knit segregated town during that time. Paul and I attended the same Catholic grade school (Holy Cross) and our families belonged to the same parish. I remember Paul playing the guitar at folk masses.
I first met Paul when he was just 4 years old. He bit my arm. While we were friends, we didn't consistently spend time together until a few years later as Paul was two grades behind me in school. We bonded over many things like baseball, chess, fishing and especially music. I met Joe Shawhan through Paul; and Paul started spending time with some of my friends, who were older. And in retrospect, probably not the best influence.
It would be difficult to overstate the influence we had on each other during our formative years. We spent so much time with each other's families, Paul bought his first car from my sister, a 1966 Ford Mustang. I fondly remember chatting with Paul's mother and grandmother at their kitchen table and going swimming at his aunt's house.
We shared so many friends and good times over the ensuing years that it wouldn't be possible to recount them all. We spent summers and later weekends at the Jersey Shore. We took fishing trips, we went clubbing and we went to numerous concerts. Two of the concerts were standouts as we sat in the first few rows at Madison Square Garden. The fist was Led Zeppelin, February 1975; the second was Paul McCartney, December 1989, when McCartney returned to touring after a 10-year hiatus. When each of us got married in our 20's, we were in each other's wedding parties
Recently, I was in contact with Paul through my wife's Facebook account. I was happy to see that he was doing what he loved with the people he loved.
Paul was a generous, kind person who was always willing to help his friends. He had .an infectious laugh and warm smile. Paul was an intelligent talented musician who loved playing and performing music. He could be funny and mischievous, while being sensitive and understanding.

Thank you Paul for being a good friend with a big heart. From the early school days in Harrison we shared many life experiences together and with the gang as well. Remembering your Dad bringing fresh rolls and pastries from Pechter's bakery in town as young kids that made the day one to remember for sure. In the summer every weekend at Mystic Islands, NJ swimming in the lagoon and hitch hiking to AC boardwalk many times before we had driver license's and hitch hiking was the cool thing to do. Wright after Woodstock era remember peace and love to all. Sure miss those days for sure. A couple of long distance fishing excursions to Hawk Lake fishing lodge, Quebec, Canada. The only way in to the cabin was park, load your luggage into a wheel barrell and go down the path to the 16 ft. wooden boat parked waiting at the dock. Load luggage on board and get that 15 hp gas motor to start and putt across the lake to your private cabin. So much fooling and joking around . For some reason, fishing was not the priority of the day, " Go Figure ". We still had a blast. Asked Paul for a favor and he played a couple of songs in church at my Wedding . That definitley made my day special. So I am sure Paul being a great person with a huge heart touched many of his friends with his kindness.
Thank you Paul for being that friend.
Joe Shawhan
