Sister Louis Marie Bryan, 84, a Sister of Charity of St. Elizabeth, died Thursday, November 8, 2012 at St. Anne Villa in Convent Station, NJ.
Sister Louis Marie was born in St. Thomas, Virgin Islands, the daughter of Arthur and Iza (Lanclos) Bryan. She enetered the Sisters of Charity on August 20, 1957 and was a member for 55 years.
Sister Louis Marie graduated with an AB Degree in Sociology from Howard University College of Liberal Arts, Washington, DC; an MSW Degree and a DSW Degree in Social Casework from Columbia University, School of Social Work, New York, NY.
She was an educator who also served in social services in New Jersey and the Virgin Islands. She served as an instructor and Director of Upward Bound and the EOF Project at the College of St. Elizabeth, Convent Station, NJ. Sister Louis Marie was a founding mother of the National Black Sisters Conference. She was a a Social Worker and Director of Social Services at St. Mary's Hospital, Passiac, NJ. She served at Sts. Peter and Paul Parish, Virgin Islands, as an Associate Pastor, Director of the Family Life Apostolate, Diocesan Chancellor, Executive Director of Catholic Chriaites, and Adjunct Staff Member at the Chancery Office in St. Thomas, Virgin Islands. She retired to St. Anne Villa, Convent Station in 2007 where she resided until her death.
She is survived by the Sisters of Charity; a brother, Mario and his wife Angela; a sister, Sheila Butler; and many nieces and nephews.
