Obituary of SISTER BERNADETTE THERESE McCANN

Sister Bernadette Therese McCann, a Sister of Charity of St.Elizabeth, died Monday morning, March 4, 2013 at St. Anne Villa in Convent Station, NJ. She was 78. Sister Bernadette Therese McCann was born in New Boston, Pennsylvania, the daughter of Gabriel and Frances (nee Green) McCann, She entered the Sisters of Charity on September 6, 1955 and was a member for 57 years. She graduated from the College of St. Elizabeth, Convent Station, NJ with a BA degree in Economics, from Columbia University, New York, NY with a MA degree in Higher Education, and from Iona College, New Rochelle, NY with a MS degree in Counseling. Sister Bernadette Therese served in education, social services and in counseling in New Jersey and Ohio. She was a teacher at the Academy of St. Aloysius, Jersey City, NJ; secretary to the President of the College of. St. Elizabeth; and director of College Relations in the College of St. Elizabeth. She was director of Santa Rita and Founders Residence Halls and later served as Director of Novices for the congregation. In the 1970's, Sister Bernadette worked with Operation Extension, Paterson, NJ and in Catholic Community Action,Cleveland, OH. Sister Bernadette Therese later served as Director of Counseling at the College of St. Elizabeth; Director of Treatment at Mrs. Wilson's Halfway House, Morristown, NJ; Director of the Sexual Abuse Program, Deerwood Center, Somerset, NJ, and in private practice. She served on multiple congregational boards and committees. She moved to St, Anne Villa in 2011 where she resided until her death. She is survived by the Sisters of Charity; her sister, Joan Cook of Seminole, FL.; her sister-in-law, Jean McCann of Tennessee; and many nieces, nephews, grandnieces, grandnephews, colleagues and friends.
