Obituary of SISTER MARIE MICHAEL GARNER

Sister Marie Michael Garner, a Sister of Charity of St. Elizabeth passed away Wednesday afternoon, December 17, 2014 at St Anne Villa, Convent Station. She was 89.
Sister Maria Michael was born in Jersey City, the daughter of Michael and Mary J. (O'Keefe) Garner. She entered the Sisters of Charity on March 25, 1945 and was a member for 69 years.
Sister Maria Michael graduated from the College of Saint Elizabeth, Convent Station, New Jersey with a B.S. degree in Elementary Education and from Seton Hall University, South Orange with an M.A. degree in Education. Sister Maria Michael was an educator in New Jersey. She served as a teacher at Immaculate Conception School, Elizabeth; Our Lady Help of Christians School, East Orange; St. Paul School, Clifton; St. Mary School, Dumont; Our Lady of Sorrows School, South Orange and St. Stephen School, Kearny. Sister Maria Michael was Principal and teacher at Immaculate Heart of Mary School, Maplewood and at Immaculate Conception School, Montclair. She served as a volunteer at St. Vincent Nursing Home, Cedar Grove. She moved to Saint Anne Villa, Convent Station in 2013 where she resided until her death.
She is survived by the Sisters of Charity; nieces and nephews, grand- and great-grand-nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by her siblings: Bishop Robert F. Garner, Michael Garner, Francis Garner, Mary Garner Berkowicz, Catherine Garner, Irene Garner Keegan and Claire Garner.
