Sister Anita Agnes Whalen, 99, a Sister of Charity of Saint Elizabeth, died Friday, February 27, 2015 at Saint Anne Villa, Convent Station, NJ.
Sister Anita Agnes was born in Westfield, NJ, the daughter of Michael and Mary (Rigney) Whalen. She entered the Sisters of Charity on September 8, 1934 and was a member for 80 years.
Sister Anita Agnes graduated with a B.A. in Spanish from the College of St. Elizabeth, Convent Station, NJ and an M.A. in Spanish from the University of Notre Dame, South Bend, Indiana.
Sister Anita Agnes served in the education ministry. She served as a teacher at All Saints School, Jersey City, NJ; San Antonio Santurce, Puerto Rico; St. Mary Elementary School, Elizabeth, NJ; Sts. Peter and Paul High School, Virgin Islands; the Academy of St. Aloysius High School, Jersey City, NJ; and Paramus Catholic Regional High School, Paramus, NJ. Sister taught Catechetics in Our Lady of Divine Love School, Caranavi, Bolivia. She then served as an audio-visual aide in Paramus Catholic H.S, Paramus, NJ,. Sister Anita Agnes retired to Saint Anne Villa, Convent Station in 2004 where she resided until her death.
She is survived by the Sisters of Charity, nieces and nephews, and grand- and great-grand- nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by her brothers, James and Michael and her sister, Sister Mary Dominic Whalen, SC.
