I just heard about Mary Ann's passing today. I shared a 3-month sabbatical with her in Dublin Ireland in the Fall of 2005. As the only Canadian we became good friends. She travelled to Otrawa, Canada and assisted in my vesting after my bishop completed the prayers of ordination on the Feast of St Francis of Assisi in October 2007. Thank you Mary Ann for your special friendship! Rest in peace with our Lord and Creator.

I am so saddened to hear about Sr. Leonella's passing. She comforted me when my mom passed in 1959 before entering 8th grade in St Brendan's. Mostly remembering her for encouraging me to play my accordion for our school plays.. and having me choreograph our 5th grade play! She must have seen more in me than I did myself. In 1993 she came to our one and only school reunion and I so loved seeing her again I invited her to my dads house for breakfast next morning. She came with Sr. Margaret ( no longer a nun) and spent hours reminiscing. she had a wonderful smile and loving heart. I had no idea she was so talented... and was so grateful she became a part of my life so early in life, perhaps molding me and encouraging my love for the arts, which I still have today..You will always be in my heart Sr Leonella.

Dear Janet,
My aunt Mary Ann (Sr. Leonella) would be soooo proud to know that one of her students wrote this lovely tribute. You are very kind and I will share this with my family.
My heart is hurting so much over her death. You made me happy reading your message.

I graduated from DePaul H.S. in 1971. Sister Leonella was a great teacher along with being a great listener, observer of human behavior and mentor. In my 12 years of catholic education, she was the most talented person I've ever met. After all of these years, I have vivid memories of class, glee club, the annual musical and the broadway plays. None of these would have occurred without Sister Leonella.

My sincere condolences to all her loved ones on the death of Sister Leonella. She was a rare and great person.
She was a teacher in DePaul Catholic High School when I began teaching there in 1970. I was a shy greenhorn just off the boat from Ireland then, and she was a shining example of confidence, fearlessness, creativity, expansiveness, and energy. She was teaching Sociology, doing the yearbook, directing a cast of thousands in the musicals every year, doing countless other activities, and all with seeming ease and expertise.
I could not imagine ever being like that, and I never was!! Few were.
She tried to teach me how to not have reams and reams of information in a lesson plan and how to engage the students and stretch the material out. I didn't know how to do it for many years.
We met many times over the years and always, I envied her ability to be involved and efficient in so many ways. She lived so many lives in one.
I feel so sad that I did not know of her health problems or her stay in The Villa. I regret so many lapses on my part, but her enthusiasm was so great every time we met, that I think she would just forgive me.
I am shocked to learn of her passing. I found out totally by accident today from a mutual acquaintance from our DePaul years.
I want you all to know how she impressed me. She was so rare. I hope her soul is somewhere good, unless she's already back on earth, being the president of some country and making it all run effortlessly.
Goodbye, Mary Ann, a name I almost never called her. Love forever from Sadie McHugh
