As I write this eulogy for my dear Uncle Ray, the tears form in my eyes, as he is the last of a vanishing breed of the elder relatives and era of the days gone by that belonged to both silent generation and the greatest generation. It was that generation that grew up during and in the ashes of the Great Depression and through WW2. A generation of hard work, sense of nationalism, pride and achievement and little time for grievance.
The tears will be replaced with smiles and the fun, vivid and fond memories I have as he was indeed a great Uncle. He now joins my Aunt Santa and his children Cathy and Ray and my Dad, Michael and Mom, Sara at the eternal dinner table where their flame will always shine brightly they will always be looking out for their children, grandchildren and siblings.
Ray Vagge was a veteran and patriot who served his country during WW2. He worked hard delivering mail and supporting and raising his family in New York City, Greenwich Village and Queens and later NJ. For over 40 years he was dedicated to serving the public as an employee of the US Postal Service and ST Vincent's Hospital. Uncle Ray or Uncle Norton as I affectionately called him based on the actor Art Carney aka Ed Norton in the famous TV show the Honeymooners.
My memories of uncle ray were his gut belly, hearty laugh and never ending sense of humor. The funny stories he and my father used to share have remained with me from childhood through adulthood. Their escapades in traveling together on vacation, living in Greenwich Village, working in the postal service and hospital and summertimes in Monroe, upstate NY. His funny stories of the crazy people he would meet on his mail route made for great dinnertime hilarity.
Despite the hurdles thrown at them during life, they were knocked down, got up, dusted themselves off and embraced life and all its challenges with vim and vigor. Uncle Ray was that man.
I can always remember the days of him and my Dad working together on house projects - painting, putting up sheet rock, laying down carpet or moving furniture in houses in Monroe. It was like Ralph Kramden and Ed Norton or the adventures of Laurel and Hardy. I remember the day they painted the house in Monroe in the blistering heat and heading down to the lake to cool off like it was only yesterday. I remember the time someone stole the lounge chairs off his property. He and my dad scoured the neighborhood for days in Monroe looking for the culprit. My dad then called him pretending to be the state troopers saying they found the lounge chairs floating in the middle of Walton Lake.
I remember the arguments and debates on sports - Uncle Ray was a Giants and Mets fan (originally a Giants baseball fan) and the heated discussions on who was better mays or Mantle?
I remember Uncle Ray and my dad together taking us hunting for frogs, hikes in the woods, and piling into his Dodge Coronet for trips to the ice cream stand known as the 3 bears. Monroe NY was a an escape and an eternity ago- summer picnics, barbecues, and Uncle Ray taking pride in the his great green lawn of the little yellow house by the Walton Lake. I remember going down to the dock and fishing with him on one 4th of July morning. I remember when he took us over to the frog ping and we caught seven or eight large bullfrogs. I remember going to the county fair with him and my dad my cousin Richard and Cathy , eating cotton candy and riding the roller coaster. I remember the time he rode his motor cycle with my aunt santa on the back- it was hysterical! I remember his dog Sandy and cat Bonnie.
I remember conversations they had about their trips to Florida, Long Boat Key, Mexico, California and the Caribbean. I remember Uncle Ray and Aunt Santa dancing up a storm at many of the wedding and functions. Always the life of the party! I remember Uncle Ray raving about their trip to Italy and having to sit through three hours of home movies about their trip.
I remember when he accidentally flus

To my Dad,
Raymond F. Vagge
Years of Memories can
never Fade.
My Dad was the steady hand, the
one that endured mainly in Silence .
A Trooper
As he Son, I tried so very much
to mirror his work ethic and
quiet leadership.
He worked 2 jobs for over
25 years
Each year, since 1976, I worked on
Labor Day, this in recognition of
his labor, his struggle.
I never missed working on
Labor Day, that, for over 35 years.
... I took pride in that.
Pride in him, pride in tribute
to his Service that made it
possible for me to realize my
dreams, my goals.
The past 8 years plus, I tried
to pay him back with my Service
to him, when I could , how I could,
this, to try to level out my debt
to him for all his years of toil.
I came to know him on a different
level during that time.
... greatful We had those moments.
We now move forward.
As a Family, we have suffered
greatly since 2007.
... now four losses.
Four lives
Four loved ones
Countless memories
May he be at Peace.
May he get some Rest.
Leave the light on Dad.
... I'll see you, Mom, Ray and Cathy
soon enough.
Your Loving Son,
Richard

I will remember my father-in-law as always having a sense of humor (he made us laugh a lot). I always enjoyed our conversations about his favorite teams (Giants and Mets - my favorite teams also).
I remember he and my husband (his son Ray jr) sharing many Sundays during the football season going to see the Giants at Giant Stadium in Rutherford, now known as the Meadowlands. My husband always looked forward to attending those games with his dad. I remember my father-in-law telling me how he was able to acquire the season tickets. He must have written a very touching letter to the Giants Organization about he and my husband being 2 dedicated Giants fans for so many years That was the gist of it. Whatever else he stated in the letter must have been very sincere. He made it on the list of Giants Season ticket holders, and for the next 30 years, he and my husband enjoyed those games at the stadium in NJ.
There were other Sundays when the Giants were away, that my father-in-law would come over to watch the game with my husband, and sometimes I would join them. There was something about my husband and father-in-law's excitement during those Giants games, especially when they were winning, that drew me into their world of becoming an enthusiastic, avid Giants fan myself.
I look back on those days with fond, loving memories that I will always cherish!
