Obituary of SISTER DOROTHY JOSE LICHTENBERG

Sister Dorothy José Lichtenberg, 99, a Sister of Charity of Saint Elizabeth, died Monday, April 20, 2020 at The Villa at Florham Park, Florham Park, New Jersey.
Sister Dorothy José was born in Newark, N.J., the daughter of Charles and Ella (Koermaier) Lichtenberg. She entered the Sisters of Charity on September 8th, 1937 and was a member for 82 years.
Sister Dorothy José graduated from the College of Saint Elizabeth, Convent Station, NJ with a B.S. degree in elementary education. A grant from the National Science Foundation enabled her to study Mathematics at St. Peter's College in Jersey City. She also studied Mathematics at the College of the Holy Cross in Worcester, MA.
Sister Dorothy José was an educator in New Jersey. She served as a teacher at St. Nicholas School, Passaic; Sacred Heart School, Newark; St. John High School, Paterson; and St. Patrick High School, Elizabeth.
Sister Dorothy José's long ministry to the people of St. Patrick's began in 1958. After ten years as a math teacher Sister Dorothy José was appointed principal; she served as principal for 24 years. After Sister Dorothy José's tenure as principal, she continued her ministry to the students and families of St. Patrick's until the school closed in 2012. Sister Dorothy José then volunteered at Trinitas Hospital, Elizabeth in the Intensive Care Nursery, where she fed and cuddled infants. Sister Dorothy José retired to the Villa in 2013 where she served as a Lector in the Villa chapel.
Sister Dorothy José was predeceased by her brother Gilbert, her sister Muriel Francescone and her nephew Thomas Lichtenberg. She is survived by the Sisters of Charity; her nieces, nephews, cousins, grandnieces and grandnephews.
