JEAN A. EL-HAJJ EULOGY - 8-11-2008
Aunt Jean was the most kind, loving, generous and FUN Aunt anyone could hope for. My earliest memory of her was when I was about three. It was a Sunday afternoon in Shenandoah, PA and my parents were going to a movie matinee. Aunt Jean was going to entertain me. She was so excited. She said, "Today we're going to make chocolate drop cookies…and we're going to DROP them all over the floor!" Even for a three year old I knew this was pretty funny. I think it was at that moment I received the love of baking from Aunt Jean…and a high cholesterol count!
Aunt Jean was extremely creative and talented. She sewed and knitted and did all kinds of crafts. We were the recipients of handmade clothing, knitted sweaters and holiday centerpieces. She loved doing things for others. Whenever there was a major life event Aunt Jean would begin preparing months ahead…making shower favors, wedding favors, baby shower favors, graduation favors and maybe favors for no reason at all. Her love and generosity knew no bounds.
As you probably all know, Aunt Jean loved sweets. Maybe that's what made her so SWEET - and diabetic. She would make cookies, or Lebanese pastries for all our special occasions and holidays. And, THEN…she started making home made candies. I remember, my brother-in-law, Dean, was new to the family…and it was his first Christmas with us. Aunt Jean arrived with boxes upon boxes of homemade chocolate candies. Poor Dean thought he had married in to some bizarre Hershey's cult!
Aunt Jean loved and cared for all her family selflessly. She was everyone's mother. She was happiest when she was doing for others…making bridal dolls, creating favors, making cookies, candies…taking care of and helping others. THAT'S what made her so special!
When Uncle George was hospitalized she moved right in to his hospital room and would not leave his side. This past year was difficult for her. She had not been without her brother in her ENTIRE life. But even in her loneliness or physical pain, she never lost her sense of humor. In our many phone conversations or visits she'd always manage to laugh and make us laugh.
Not only will we miss Aunt Jean, but we will be missing the last of the El-Hajj clan. She was the last of a wonderful, warm family. The
El-Hajj household was always one of love, laughter, happiness, generosity and FUN. We all enjoyed each other's company and loved nothing more than gathering around the piano and singing for hours on end, being silly and having FUN.
We the nieces and nephews and our families have been fortunate to have basked in all that love. We hope we are better people for it.
We will miss Aunt Jean terribly, but we know she's happily reunited with her parents and siblings, doing what they all loved most of all -
being together, gathered around that big piano in the sky, singing away and having a GREAT time.
Aunt Jean, we love you and we'll be lost without you!
