Nationally-syndicated columnist, published author, freelance journalist, college professor, devoted father. Roger touched more lives in a positive and enduring way than those of us, like me, who were privileged to call him friend and brother and who now mourn his loss. The keen analytical and communication skills that served him so well in his professional career were matched by his compassion for family, friends and his many and eclectic cultural and aesthetic pursuits.
Dianne, our prayers and thoughts are with you, Elena and Ben. May you find comfort in knowing all the lives that Roger touched.

Roger and I shared a lot of things in common. Roger's parents actually escaped from Cuba's totalitarian communism so that the three boys could live in a more open society. He loved the liberties that this great country affords. He was first a model student in Hudson County ("the Little Havana of the North") and then a nationwide model professional journalist and writer. He mastered both his native Spanish and English, the language of his adopted country. He later founded an exemplary family with Dianne; also a journalist; together they had two handsome children. He wrote many informative books, essays and columns. And yet, somewhat, he may have felt that he had not done enough, as he wanted to pay back more to the society that --imperfect as so many may find it-- gave him an opportunity to live free, excel and, still better, raise a new generation of Hernández's able to think freely.
To Dianne, Elena, Benjamin, and Roger, Sr., I, for one, will certainly miss Roger. I was honored as a guest at your home. I want you to know that he was highly generous with his time, providing me with feedback about my own writings -and I always learned something new from him. Que En Paz Descanse, mi buen y brillante amigo.

Spring semester 1974, I had the good fortune to be invited to pledge Theta Chi fraternity at Rutgers College. Among my pledge brothers were Roger Hernandez and John Young, good friends from Union City. I was then an international student from Hong Kong. Back then, the three of us were surely not your sterotypical fraternity man, I suppose we were pioneers in a way. I think that Roger and John will agree with me though, that joining Theta Chi was one of the best things that we did in our lives. After more than 30 years, all three of us were at that excellent reinstatement dinner a few months ago. I couldn't help but notice the diversity in the new men, and was pleased to see that. I'd like to think that Roger, John and I helped in a small way to diversify the fraternity population, to more closely resemble the student population in general.
Of course, Roger went on to become a pioneer in many areas, as a journalist, a professor, columnist, etc.
I do believe that, no matter what Roger did, he did it with his heart, in his unique, true, authentic, and passionate way. He touched may lives.
I'm so glad that I got to see Roger twice this year, though I wished there were many more chances to come. I will always remember Roger, my pledge brother, fondly, with a smile on my face, and warmth in my heart.
Dianne, Elena and Benjamin, my deepest sympathy to you. I hope that the many wonderful memories of this beautiful man will help sustain you in this diffiult time.
I do have a hunch that God called on him early for a reason. Maybe they need an editor for a new bilingual, cross-cultural magazine they're starting in Heaven!
Take good care.

Dear Dianne, Elena and Ben,
I was so sorry to hear of Roger's sudden passing. I had several warm and good conversations with him about work in the last couple of weeks. We also spoke briefly about his upcoming surgery and he seemed so ready to take on this health challenge.
My thoughts are with you. Please call on me/us if we can be of any help.
Inara de Leon and Todd Norbitz

Dear Dianne, I am deeply saddened to hear of Roger's passing. This past year when we reconnected it was as if we had never lost touch. Roger was always upbeat, fun, full of questions and "remember when..." In a way it seemed as if time had stood still. I will miss him and always remember him fondly. Patti

I am the Provost at the New Jersey Institute of Technology. I have been very proud that Roger chose to be a member of our faculty, and of all that he has accomplished in his life. His contributions to NJIT have been of the highest order, and he is admired by students and faculty alike. We will all miss him, and extend our heartfelt condolences to his friends and family.
Best regards,

Dear Diane and Family
Lisa and I are so sorry for your loss.
My inner circle of friends has lost an icon. Our common bond began, like so many of his many friends at the Theta Chi Fraternity at Rutgers in 1975, and years later included the night on Nassua Street when he introduced me to my wife, in 1980. After spending so much of our time devoted to our respected families and careers, I am so happy that we rekindled our friendship in recent years. I came to know that Roger was a dual citizen, and learned more about the willpower and resolve of Cuban immigrants in the early 1960s than any history book ever taught me. Roger was so diverse, and I enjoyed reading his columns, trading emails or talking directly with him on serious topics of immigration, politics, health care, as well as baseball and sophomoric memories of our college days. I had the privilege of "helping" Roger research an article for NJMonthly magazine about the Osprey and Jersey Shore clubs, where he wrote, "But Pat and I leave early. Walking to the car, we talk about the uncertainties of health after 50. 'We're at the age where anything can happen,' Pat says."
So true Roger, rest in peace my friend.

Hi Dianne,
It was my privilege and honor to know and work with Roger. He was a wonderful teacher who impacted the lives of so many of our students. He was a good friend who gave generously of himself to those around him. Most importantly, he loved you and the kids very much. He would beam with pride when he told me of anyone in the family's various accomplishments or activities. His blazed a trail in our profession and was a beacon for those who will follow. He also was very kind to me during his college days when Phil would be dragging his "little brother" around the fraternity. I will miss talking to him about soccer, the horses you own, you, anything and everything. Whoever takes his place in our classroom has some very big shoes to fill. Jane, Rachel, Caryn and I have Roger, you and the kids in our thoughts, our prayers and our hearts.

Roger was one of the finest and most genuine men I've ever known. I thoroughly enjoyed receiving his weekly columns and I was consistently impressed by his intellect and grasp of issues. He was passionate about his ethnic roots and was dogged in his pursuit of the real issues regarding Spanish Americans. We shared a love of "the beautiful game" and I thought of him recently when Spain won Euro 2008. He was fine man and someone of whom his two beautiful children can be proud. I wish Diane and the children strength and comfort. I'll miss him.

Dear Dianne,
Kellie and I send our sincere condolences to you, Elena and Ben. Roger was truly one of a kind - a true gentleman in an era when grace and compassion are not always in vogue. We will say a prayer for the repose of his soul and he will be remembered fondly - the highest compliment anyone can be paid. The long talks Roger and I had during his pledging and college days seem like only yesterday.
With deepest sympathy,
Tony Portuese (Port)
