Obituary of JOHN GENE SCHMID

John "Gene" Schmid died Saturday morning, June 12, 2010 at his home in Hillsborough following a brief illness. He was 74. Born in Jersey City, and raised in Kearny, he had lived in the Lake Hiawatha section of Parsippany for 45 years before moving to Hillsborough nearly four years ago. Mr. Schmid served in th U.S. Marine Corps during peacetime. He earned his BA from St. Peter's College, and his MA from Montclair State College. He had worked as the Director of Career Services at the New Jersey Institute of Technology (NJIT) from 1967-1991. During his tenure he also was head coach of the school's baseball tean for 25 years. Mr. Schmid was a longtime parishioner of St. Peter the Apostle Roman Catholic Church in Parsippany where he served as an usher. He was a member and past president of the North Jersey Football Officials Association and a member of Board 168 Basketball Officials. An avid sports fan, he was also a volunteer coach with the American Legion Baseball in Parsippany. He was preceded in death by his beloved wife Marie C. (nee McDonough) in 2008. Survivors include two daughters, Maureen Jones and her husband Kevin of Rockaway and Patty Schmid of Hillsborough; two sons, John Schmid of Hillsborough, and Kevin Schmid and his wife Anne of Mount Arlington; his beloved granddaughters Katie and Megan; a brother, Frank Schmid and his wife Maureen of Toms River; a brother-in-law Theodore McDonough and his wife Dorothy of Mahwah; and six nephews.
