Thank you Tom for sending me the card letting me know about Mary Ellen's passing. I am shocked and so sad, and so late to know. I first met her in 1994 when I was an editor at Fodor's and she was a freelancer. We became friends and I cherished her warmth, great advice, sincerity and kindness. I loved how she was up for adventure whether it was in the city or in Timbuktu. I will miss her always.

My deepest condolences to the family and friends of Mary Ellen Shultz. She touched so many lives during her time here on earth. Death is something that we will never get used to and we are eternally grateful to God for the promise in the bible at 1 Cor 15:26 where He promises to swallow up death forever and we have the hope to live eternally here on earth. My sympathy goes to Mel's family. I could not write sooner because the picture of her captures so perfectly I cry every time I come to this site.
Mel will be much missed by so many people. There is a hole in our building of 1469 Lexington Avenue where she lived for 35 years. She always seemed to know when things were tough and one needed cheering up. In my mind is a picture of opening up my door there would be Mel with a bouquet to cheer one up or to just celebrate. There are three of us who were Cancer babies. Sunflowers were a common shared flower. In July it will be another reminder of the vacancy.
It is all a shock. She is gone too soon. She packed as much life into those 58 years as I think anyone could. She had a lot of loves: her family, her writing, her travel, her beloved cat companions (many over the years), the friends she made during that packed life. This is just the tip of the iceberg as we were reminded
by the speakers at the memorial.
It is a loss to the world. Now we need to find homes for Lola and Stella her final companions.

Mel and I worked together at McCann in the early 90s. Although we hadn't seen each other in many years, we kept in touch through ichat. Our chats would often begin with me asking 'How are you?' and Mel responding 'Before we get to that, tell me about you, my dear.' That was Mel - always putting everyone ahead of herself. She was kind and generous and funny and silly and the most caring, supportive and unconditional person I have ever known. I will miss my 'cyber buddy' always. My deepest condolences to Mel's family.

Mel - "Melísima", I called her, with great affection - was a dear friend and one of the most loving, generous persons I have known. I first met her when she was my translation student at NYU in 1987, and eventually hired her as a fact checker for a guidebook I was writing on Mexico. I am happy that that experience helped launch her travel writing career - a career made in heaven for someone so drawn to other lands, languages and cultures, and which gave her so much fulfilment. Over the years we spent some ecstatic and hilarious New Year's Eves together, drank tequila and ate tacos al pastor in Mexican bars and eateries around NY - she had become quite an expert in things Mexican, evident also in her growing collection of Mexican tchotchkes. Her apartment, artfully chock-a-block with books and objects that all held meaning for her, reflected the disarming ebullience of her personality, as well as the broad scope of her interests. She was loyal and selfless, tending to my cats while I was away (never was there a greater devotee of felines), and making time in her busy life to attend my mother's memorial service and my wedding. I loved her joie de vivre and spontaneity, her incredible candour, sensitivity and perceptiveness, her unwavering support of friends and family, her resoluteness in the face of adversity. She had a gift for friendship, and though we sometimes went months without contact, our reunions by phone or in person were always easy and joyful. One could say anything to Mel, sure of her empathy and non-judgmental reactions. She loved to talk; but she was also a wonderful listener, full of concern and attentiveness. A consummate schmoozer, she possessed a natural charm and radiance - qualities that contributed to building the wide circle of friends she now leaves behind. I am shocked and saddened, will miss her terribly, and extend my heartfelt condolences to her family and other friends. Adios, mi cuate!

I've worked with Mel for the last five years and I still can't accept that she is gone. I keep thinking she'll pop around the corner and say hello — maybe show me her new pair of earrings. When I said good-bye to her last Friday evening I didn't realize it would be forever.
Mel was not defined by her day job. I'll always remember her as someone with an intense appreciation of people and places less developed than ours. She was so non-judgmental of all the different cultures she visited. She saw only the positive. If only there were more people like Mel in the world.

After growing up in Dumont with Mel and her wonderful family, one of the pleasures of my life in New York City was running into Mel on Lexington Avenue. We lived about fifteen blocks apart, and once or twice a year I would run into her on the street. It was always a delight to catch up on Schultz family doings and hear about Mel's latest adventure. It's hard to believe that all of that is over. New York, and Lexington Avenue, just lost a little of their excitement.

I was shocked when I first heard of Mel's sudden passing. My thoughts immediately went to Mel's father, brother and sister and the void there now was in their lives.I have learned alot about Mel in the last few days. Writing, travel, friendships, language and family were all part of Mel. Most of all it was the impression she left on those she touched. She touched many across the globe. The void was much bigger than I thought. The world had lost a gentle soul. While I only saw Mel maybe once a year, I will miss her greatly.

How can I begin to tell you how sorry I am that Mel, who taught me everything I ever needed to know about being fashionably late in Latin America, has left us so early?
We were nearly neighbors in Manhattan and certainly cohorts at classes and concerts and picnics and such.
I remember our Flamenco days practicing zapteado in my 27 X 3-foot hallway. I remember very, very, very long walks with Mel egging me on by promising we only had to walk another few blocks until I arrived panting and exhausted at my doorstep. Mel, of course, was never tired, or at least not that it ever showed.
I remember her at weekends at our friend's house in the Catskills and at that same friend's wonderful Christmas parties on way West 14th Street. I remember the amazingly thoughtful and perfect gifts she brought back from all her trips…the tiny mate packets from Buenos Aires, the magical powders she came back with from the market in Brasil.
He Spanish was purest Castellano; her Portuguese was more Lisboa than Rio. She was a delight to listen to and talk with. She was a gift in my life and I expected to have her for always. That said, I'm grateful to have known her and I'm so very sorry that she's gone.

Most of our friendship took place by telephone...endless conversations where we spoke of life, philosophy, the predicaments of the planet and of course girl stuff.
Even though it has been a long time since our last telephone marathon the memories of those talks are strong, wonderful and special. Our minds are a powerful thing……the information stored there goes beyond space and time. We may not be able to recall those memories verbatim, but our sensory perception gives life to that history so it truly becomes part of our being, our journey, our library of experiences. All those pieces create a montage of our life and are some of the tools allowing us to take this journey better equipped and with more joy and aloha.
If I could count the hours we shared, it wasn't many, but the value was priceless.
She will always be in my heart.
Smiles and hugs and much aloha,
Jeanne

Mel was a hell of a great friend, with just the right balance of silly, serious, thoughtful and intellectual. She always had good advice and a comforting word. We would talk about our cats and about the statue of Fernando Pessoa at the Brasiliera in Lisboa, among the myriad of topics she could enliven.
She rarely said a bad word about anyone, even in times of great stress. She had the funniest stories, and we would always get in trouble when we worked together. The supervisor would come over and tell us she could hear our laughter from half way across the sweatshop they called a work room.
My sister lives in Portugal, so Mel and I had an instant connection. We would whisper in Portuguese and listen to fado. In October of 2009, Mel and her friend Janet visited my sister at her country house in Dornes, Portugal. They stayed for two days, and really had a blast. I was so happy for Mel to visit the place that I love most. We planned to go back together. Of course, my sister and her partner, Vladimir, just adored Mel and had a glorious time hosting.
I can't tell you how shocked and saddened I am. Her loss causes me tremendous grief. My heart goes to you, her family. I will be at the service on Saturday.

You´ve always had the beautiful soul of a wise traveler, and you are finally flying free, like the free spirit you were all your life.
I won´t say goodbye. I refuse. Your presence will always be with me, like a sweet companion, in every trip I take for the rest of my life on this earth, the brightest star in all the skies, wherever my travels will take me.
So much love from your "gitana" friend who would never let go of you,

Although I didn't know Mel as well I always found her to be a friendly, fun, full of life and very caring person. Over the years I have come to see what closeness and love in a family really is. Maggie and Mel were as close as sisters could be. I'm sad for the tragic loss of Mel and for my friend Maggie's broken heart. Mel's adventurous life and happiness she brought to so many has ended much too soon. I'm sure she is on the ultimate adventure now and her memory will live on forever.

Mel, for 23 years, I was so lucky to have you not only as my neighbor for all those years, but as a dear friend and coworker. All the great talks we had about traveling the world and laughing about all sorts of things. You shared your generosity of spirit by introducing me to your wonderful friends in different countries whenever I went to a new city overseas. I am lucky to say they are now my dear friends too. Your kindness is rare and will be so dearly missed. I hope you're in Africa right about now hanging out with a tribe and the animals with a huge smile on your face, that's the way I'll remember you best. I'll miss hearing you say, "stop and smell the grappa." I'll remember that forever. You will be missed.

Mel was a constant inspiration to everyone around her. She always had a smile on her face and was ready to tackle any challenge that came her way. Beautiful inside and out, her presence in this world, however brief it may have been, truly made a difference. I know that she is in the arms of God right now, and when I ask myself how something like this could have happened, I realize that He needed her too. I am glad to have met her, and I can honestly say that I am a better person for it. I know that she will continue her travels around the world as an angel.
Love,
Diana

The news continues to be a shock. Mel was such a warm and friendly person who I was always happy to see. I will miss the times we spent at various ATA Congress's, the lifts home, the occasional dinners we shared in NYC. After the ATA holiday party we had such fun at a Harlem comedy show. May her soul rest in Peace.

This news is such a shock. Will miss how your happy greeting and smile made me feel as we met each other at ATA's Congresses. It is difficult to imagine attending a Congress and you not being there. Rest in peace Mary Ellen. Your friend in Los Angeles.

This is my third attempt to write something here, but there are no words that could possibly express the loss of this exceptional woman, coworker, and dear friend. I've seen Mel almost every work day and on the occasional fun-filled weekend for six years. I can't accept that she is not going to breeze into the office any minute in her black jacket and jeans and fabulous jewelry, change into her work shoes, and tell me about some interesting article she read or how she flossed her cat's teeth today. I just can't accept it. There is a black hole in the world.

My dear dear Mel,
I will so miss your absolute joy in telling me about your next trip and then all the pictures of you beaming in those wonderful lands. I can still see you standing in our kitchen lecturing me about the true virtues between ano versus resposado as only someone could who felt Mexico as a second home.
Go with peace, my dear sister. We'll see each other again (or as you would do with those long long goodbyes of yours, a bien tot, u vidimsha, asta la vista and, see ya).
With all my love, always. Tom

Mel,
I cannot imagine living without you. It is going to be very hard for me to do for a long, long, time. I almost called you today to tell you something that was annoying me, like I usually did, and then remembered I couldnt. What I feel is beyond grief. I cannot describe it. We were supposed to get old together, werent we?
Love Maggie

From 1961 to 1973 the Schultz family was an integral part of my life. They were the most unique and progressive family in our very conservative middle America neighborhood. Mel was the "cool big sister" who all of us looked up to, envied, and secretly had a crush on. As we hung out in the Schultz family den or poolside after endless hours of playing at Selzer, the conversations we had with Mel always left a lasting impression on our developing minds. I am so sorry to have lost touch with these great people and am deeply saddened to hear of Mel's passing. I still live in that great neighborhood and pass the Schultz house everyday. Driving past that great home of memories always makes me smile.Mel, you will be missed. So often I yearn for those great times...God bless all of you.
