Obituary of Sr. Jane Cavanaugh, SC
Sister Jane Cavanaugh, 95, formerly Sister Eugene Marie, a Sister of Charity of Saint Elizabeth, died Wednesday, May 18, 2022 at Saint Catherine of Siena Healthcare Center, Caldwell, NJ.
Sister Jane Cavanaugh was born in Elizabeth, New Jersey, the daughter of James and Elizabeth (Carroll) Cavanaugh. She entered the Sisters of Charity on September 8, 1945 and was a member for 70 years.
Sister Jane graduated from the College of Saint Elizabeth, Convent Station, New Jersey with a B.A. degree in American History and from Fordham University, Bronx, NY with an M.A. degree in Medieval History. She was a Fulbright recipient and studied at the University of Paris.
Sister Jane served in the education ministry in New Jersey. She served as a teacher at Our Lady of Sorrows School, South Orange; St. John High School, Paterson and St. Michael High School, Jersey City. She was Assistant Principal and First Councilor at St. Michael High School, Jersey City and Principal at Saint Peter High School. At the College of Saint Elizabeth, Convent Station, Sister Jane was Admissions Officer, Director of College Relations and Specialist, Academic Skills Center. She retired to Saint Anne Villa, Convent Station in 2011 followed by a residence at Saint Catherine of Siena Healthcare Center, Caldwell.
Sister Jane was predeceased by her sisters Mary Rita and Jean Ann. She is survived by the Sisters of Charity; her sisters Bernadette and Margaret, nephews and nieces, grand nephews and grand nieces, great grand nieces and nephews and many dear friends.
Sister Jane loved her family and was endeared by many. She had a gift of reaching out to others in need and a keen sense of helping them to find themselves. Many have said that Sister Jane was a teacher at heart, both in the classroom and wherever she went.
The wake for Sister Jane Cavanaugh will be held in Holy Family Chapel, 2 Convent Road, Convent Station, NJ from 9:30 a.m. to 11:00 a.m. on Wednesday, May 25th. The Mass of Christian Burial will follow at 11:00 a.m. Masks are required in-person. Burial will be in Holy Family Cemetery, Convent Station immediately following the Mass.
Funeral arrangements are under the direction of S.J. Priola Parsippany Funeral Service, Lake Hiawatha, NJ.
