Obituary of Sr. Ursula T. Kendig

Sister Ursula Mary Kendig, 96, a Sister of Charity of Saint Elizabeth, died Monday, July 11, 2022 at McAuley Hall Health Care Center, Watchung, NJ. Sister Ursula Mary was born in Elizabeth, New Jersey, the daughter of Thomas and Helen (McShane) Kendig. She entered the Sisters of Charity on September 7, 1946 and was a member for 75 years. Sister Ursula Mary graduated from the College of Saint Elizabeth (Saint Elizabeth University), Convent Station, New Jersey with a B.S. degree in Education. Sister Ursula Mary was an Educator and Pastoral Minister in the State of New Jersey. She served as a teacher at Saint Joseph School, Newark; Assumption School, Morristown; and Saint Peter Elementary School, New Brunswick. She was a Compensatory Education teacher at Our Lady of Victories School, Jersey City, and served as a teacher on the Independent Child Study team at Saint Joseph School, Jersey City. While serving in education, Sister Ursula often also directed the children's choir at various schools. Following many years of education ministry, Sister Ursula served in parish ministry at Saint John the Baptist Parish, Long Branch and in Saint Catharine and Saint Margaret Parish, Spring Lake. Sister Ursula also provided pastoral care at Jersey Shore Medical Center, Neptune. In 2005 Sister Ursula moved to Assisted Living at Saint Anne Villa, Convent Station, NJ. She was an active volunteer there and served as sacristan in the chapel. Sister Ursula enjoyed playing the keyboard and was known for her prayerful, generous spirit. When the Villa closed in 2021, Sister Ursula moved to McAuley Hall Health Care Center. Sister Ursula was predeceased by her sisters Gertrude Vitullo and Regina Kendig and her brothers Joseph, George, and Bernard. Sister Ursula is survived by the Sisters of Charity, many nieces, nephews, grandnieces, and grandnephews and other members of her extended family. The wake for Sister Ursula Mary Kendig will be held in Holy Family Chapel, 2 Convent Road, Convent Station, NJ from 9:30 a.m. to 11:00 a.m. on Friday, July 15. The Mass of Christian Burial will follow at 11:00 a.m. Masks are required in-person. Burial will be in Holy Family Cemetery, Convent Station immediately following the Mass.
