Obituary of Robert Joseph Whelan
Robert Joseph Whelan passed away Sunday evening, May 14, 2023, at Commonwealth Health Center, Wilkes- Barre, PA. He was 80.
Born in West Nanticoke, PA, he was a resident of Orange and Neptune, NJ, before moving to Wilkes-Barre, PA, in 1976.
He attended New York Law School and subsequently graduated with a BS in economics from Seton Hall University where he was a member of the Honor Society and the Order of the Cross & Crown.
Mr. Whelan had worked as a counselor and patient care coordinator with First Hospital Wyoming Valley of Wilkes- Barre for 20 years before his retirement in 2013. Previously, he had worked as a real estate agent.
A proud lifelong Democrat and avid reader, he enjoyed visits to New York City, NY, and Philadelphia, PA, as well as his frequent visits to various bookstores including Barnes and Noble where he had many friends.
He was preceded in death by his parents, John and Alison T. (nee Thomson) Whelan; and his siblings, Michael Whalen, Joyce Rogers, Patsy Conlon, Betty Woods, and John Whelan Jr. Survivors include two sisters, Aurelia Flickinger and Alison Sorce; and several nieces and nephews.
