Obituary of Sr. Anne P. Cunningham, SC

Sister Anne Cunningham, SC, 87, formerly Sister Anne Kevin, a Sister of Charity of Saint Elizabeth, died Friday, June 2, 2023, at Saint Catherine of Siena Healthcare Center, Caldwell, NJ.

Sister Anne was born in Newark, N.J., the daughter of Joseph F. and Mary (Greevy) Cunningham. She entered the Sisters of Charity on September 6, 1956, and was a member for 66 years.

She graduated from the College of Saint Elizabeth, Convent Station, N.J. with a B.S. degree in Business Administration and from The Catholic University of America, Washington, DC with an M.A. degree in Education.

Sister Anne was an educator and a business administrator in New Jersey and Connecticut. She served as a teacher in St. Teresa School, Summit, NJ; St. Anne School, Jersey City; and De Paul Catholic High School, Wayne. She served as Administrator Assistant in St. Mary Hospital, Passaic and was in Business Administration in the Berkeley School, Paterson. She then served as a Hospitaler in St. Raphael Hospital, New Haven, CT. She next worked in Computer Services in the Administration Building, Convent Station. She served as secretary in Rutgers University, Piscataway; Assistant Director of CILAH, College of Saint Elizabeth, Convent Station and a teacher in St. Bernard School, Bridgewater.

Sister Anne was predeceased by her parents, and siblings Joseph, John, Kevin and Marie Goullet. She is survived by the Sisters of Charity of Saint Elizabeth, sisters-in law: Elaine Cunningham, Joan Cunningham and her many friends. In addition, she has many grandnieces and grandnephews.

Sister Anne had a great love for family and especially for her nieces. When she spoke about her past works, she often mentioned how important and meaningful was her time at Rutgers University. Another significant experience was ministry in the ER at Saint Raphael's Hospital in New Haven, Connecticut. During her final years, both at St. Anne Villa and Saint Catherine of Sienna Healthcare Center, Sister Anne could be seen sitting with a sister in her room and listening as well as just being present to any person in need. She lived out the words of Saint Elizabeth Ann Seton, "Keep well to the grace of the moment…do your best and leave the rest to God."

The wake for Sister Anne Cunningham will be held in Holy Family Chapel, 2 Convent Road, Convent Station, NJ from 9:30 to 11:00 a.m. on Wednesday, June 7, 2023. The Mass of Christian Burial will follow at 11:00 a.m. Burial will be in Holy Family Cemetery, Convent Station immediately following the Mass.
