Obituary of Sr. Gloria O'Brien, SC

Sister Gloria O'Brien, 82, a Sister of Charity of Saint Elizabeth, died May 2nd, 2024, at Morristown Memorial Hospital, Morristown, NJ.

Sister Gloria was born in Newark, New Jersey, the only daughter of Walter and Mary (Donnelly) O'Brien. She entered the Sisters of Charity on August 20, 1959 and was a member for 65 years.

Gloria O'Brien attended St. Vincent Academy, Newark, NJ, and upon her graduation entered the Sisters of Charity. Sister Gloria graduated from the College of Saint Elizabeth, Convent Station, New Jersey with a B.A. degree in Mathematics and from the University of Notre Dame, South Bend, Indiana with a M.S. degree in Mathematics. Sister Gloria was an Educator in many schools throughout the State of New Jersey. She served as a teacher at St. Paul School, Clifton; Holy Rosary School, Elizabeth; East Orange Catholic High School, East Orange; St. Patrick High School, Elizabeth; St. Vincent Academy, Newark; St. Mary High School, Jersey City; Marylawn of the Oranges, South Orange; Immaculate Conception High School, Montclair; and Academy of St. Elizabeth, Convent Station. She was Principal in St. Aloysius High School, Jersey City and Principal at the Academy of St. Elizabeth.

Sister Gloria had a strong will to learn and would research data to help solve any issue that arose. She was always determined to figure out a "better way." Sister Gloria was dedicated to relationships with colleagues and friends, many of whom endured throughout her lifetime. She was a faithful member of the Maris Stella Advisory Board for many years and resided within the local community at the Motherhouse of the Sisters of Charity of Saint Elizabeth until her death.

Sister Gloria is survived by the Sisters of Charity, cousins and many dear friends.

The wake for Sister Gloria O'Brien will be held on Tuesday, May 7, 2024, from 9:30am - 11:00am in Holy Family Chapel, Convent Station, New Jersey, followed by a Mass of Christian Burial at 11am and burial in Holy Family Cemetery, Convent Station, immediately following. Funeral arrangements are under the direction of Stephan J. Priola Funeral Service, Lake Hiawatha, NJ.
