Obituary of Marilyn R. Marcus
Marilyn Rita Marcus, 82, passed away peacefully at home, with family by her side, on August 23.
She was a loving mother, grandmother, and a kind, caring friend and neighbor. She leaves behind her daughter, Lisa Marcus of New York, son Mitchell Marcus of Philadelphia, daughter-in-law Alissa, grandsons Jake, Jonah and Adin, and granddaughter Rian; and her sister-in-law Rochelle Horenstein and cousin-in-law, Myrna Goodman. She was predeceased by her older brother, Bernard Horenstein. And her beloved cats Puddles, Buddy, Sammy, Ms. Kitty, Lucky, Ming and parrot, AJ.
Marilyn was born in the Bronx, NY, the youngest child of the late Herman and Miriam Horenstein (nee Baker). She grew up on Valentine Avenue, in the Fordham neighborhood. Her father, was a rst generation Romanian immigrant born in Brooklyn, who served in the United States Navy and worked for decades as a bellhop at the historic Hotel Edison in New York City’s Theater District. Her mother, born in Manhattan, was a homemaker.
Marilyn was a passionate animal lover from a young age, beginning with her rst dog, a cocker spaniel named Tippy and a bird named Penny. She loved reading anything having to do with animals, especially books by the veterinarian and author James Herriot. She also played the accordion.
She graduated from Franklin Delano Roosevelt High School in the Bronx and attained an AAS in Business Administration from Bronx Community College.
When her children were young, Marilyn was a PTA President at PS 30 elementary school in Yonkers, NY and volunteered with special needs children. She also pursued portraiture and still life painting and pottery.
Moving to Parsippany NJ in the mid 1970’s and subsequently divorcing her husband of 13 years, Howard Marcus, Marilyn began a rewarding, decades long career in Human Resources Placement. She was a recruiter, interviewer and job developer for a multitude of industries, including pharmaceutical, nance, legal, insurance and health care. She also managed several stafng agencies and was with one agency, All-Star East Personnel, for 17 years. After retiring from Human Resources, Marilyn worked part-time for 7 years at the Lake Hiawatha Rite-Aid Pharmacy. She retired fully in 2019.
She was known for her trays of sausage and peppers, devotion to her animals and many loving friendships with people she’d worked with throughout her career, those she volunteered alongside at the Mt. Pleasant Animal Shelter, and her neighbors at Rutgers Village and Baldwin Oaks. Marilyn was incredibly proud of her children and grandchildren. She will be remembered for her generous and soft-hearted nature.
